DePauw women top Franklin for 3-0 start

Freshman Sydney Kopp poured in 29 points in 26 minutes and led the DePauw University women’s basketball team to an 84-58 win over visiting Franklin Tuesday evening.

The Tigers moved to 3-0, while the Grizzlies dropped to 1-3.

The Tigers jumped out to a 13-0 lead before Franklin scored its first points with 35 seconds left in the first period.

Kopp hit three three-pointers in a stretch of less than two minutes as the Tigers headed to the break with a 37-18 lead.

After DePauw pushed the margin to 23 early in the third, Franklin got no closer than 19 the rest of the way.

Kopp’s 29 came on 9-of-10 shooting from the floor including 5-of-5 from beyond the arc.

Taylor Howard added 18, while Maya Howard followed with 14. Melinda Franke and Kylie Morris each grabbed eight rebounds, while Claire Ryan had seven assists and Franke five.

Kayle Comer paced Franklin with 14 points with Taylor Baxter chipping in 11. Melissa Beer grabbed six boards with Mandy Fisher handing out four assists.

DePauw shot 50.9 percent from the floor, including 56.0 percent in the first half, while Franklin hit just 28.8 percent from the field including 20.7 percent in the opening half.

DePauw held a 44-35 edge in rebounds for a 17-4 second-chance point advantage. The Tigers also outscored the Grizzlies in the paint, 36-12.

The Tigers travel to Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday where they’ll face Washington-St. Louis in the opening game of the Midwest Challenge at 2 p.m.
