DPU men finish second at UChicago tourney

CHICAGO — DePauw and Chicago went in different directions in the second half in the final game of the University of Chicago Tournament on Sunday as the Tiger men suffered a 78-56 loss.

DePauw held a 35-34 advantage at halftime before being outscored 44-21 in the second half.

DePauw was held scoreless for six minutes in which it an eight-point deficit became a 15 points with 9:48 remaining. Mason Hankins broke the drought with free throws and Luke Lattner hit a 3-pointer at 7:47 to give DePauw its first field goal in eight minutes.

The Tigers shot 5-of-22 in the second half as opposed to a 15-of-29 in the first half. The Tigers shot 39 percent for the game, while Chicago shot 54 percent .

Chicago was led by trio Waller Perez, Noah Karras and Blaine Crawford who scored 25, 16 and 15 points respectively.

For DePauw, Lattner led with 18 points and was the only Tiger to reach double digits. Nate Jahn scored nine after shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Hankins scored seven off the bench.

Chicago outrebounded DePauw 40-23 and scored 21 points off turnovers.

DePauw’s bench outscored Chicago’s 18-10 and committed fewer turnovers at 14-12.

Lattner and Jack VandeMerkt made the UChicago All-Tournament Team.

Chicago is now 4-1 overall, and DePauw is 2-3.

In the opener on Saturday, Lattner led all scorers with 26 points as the Tigers topped East-West 86-77 to advance to the championship round.

VandeMerkt had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Women’s Basketball

• DePauw 72, Illinois College 55 — At Bloomington, Ill., the DePauw women’s basketball team trailed just once Sunday against Illinois College and moved to 4-1 on the season following a 72-55 win over the Lady Blues in the third-place game of Illinois Wesleyan’s Midwest Challenge.

Illinois College dropped to 2-2 on the season.

The Lady Blues scored the game’s first two points, but Maya Howard and Claire Ryan countered with threes and Sydney Kopp followed with a layup to give DePauw the lead for good at 8-2.

DePauw grabbed a 21-9 lead after the first period and held as much as a 19-point advantage on the way to a 41-25 halftime lead.

Illinois College was within 12 at 46-34 with 3:27 left in the third, but the Tigers scored five straight to push the margin to 17. DePauw held a 55-37 lead after three quarters and the Lady Blues were no closer than 16 the rest of the way.

Howard and Ryan each notched season-high point totals with 20 and 16, respectively, while Taylor Howard and Melinda Franke each grabbed nine rebounds with Kopp handing out four assists.

Brielle Greenleaf led Illinois College with 18 points and Alyssa Garde followed with 12. Carly Cameron paced the Lady Blues with eight rebounds.

DePauw shot 45.1 percent from the floor to Illinois College’s 30.4 percent and the Tigers held a 45-31 rebounding advantage.

The Tigers found themselves in the third-place game after taking their first loss of the season to No. 9 Washington University, 60-48, on Saturday.

Ryan, Kopp and Howard all reached double-figure scoring in the opener with 13, 12 and 10, respectively.

WashU went on to defeat Illinois Wesleyan, 87-86, in the title game Sunday.
