Robert Sedlack

A memorial scholarship has been established at Greencastle High School by the Class of 1985 to honor one of its own, Robert Sedlack.

Robert passed away on May 30, 2015 after a long, hard battle with ALS. The scholarship will be awarded each spring to an art student at Greencastle High School.

Scholarship applicants must submit a completed application form provided by the high school. Students must submit their artist statement, three to five pieces of their work and letters of recommendation.

Applications must be submitted between Jan. 1 and March 31 each year. To be eligible a student must be enrolled full time at Greencastle High School and applicants will be reviewed by the Robert Sedlack Scholarship Committee.

One applicant will be selected to receive the award each spring.

Robert was born in Greencastle and was the son of Robert and Ellen Sedlack. He attended Miller Elementary and then went on to graduate from Greencastle High School in 1985.

He was an accomplished leader in many ways throughout his life. At Greencastle High School he was a leader that others looked up to and followed, be it on the football field, the track, student government or in the capacity of a budding designer.

Robert went on to pursue his dreams in much the same way that any curious and talented high school graduate would. Once Robert discovered his passion in design, he put everything he had into being amazing at it.

Robert earned his Bachelor of Arts from Notre Dame in 1989 and his Masters of Fine Arts from Indiana University (Bloomington) in 1993. From 1993 to 1998 he worked at several design firms in Chicago, primarily at Gerhardt and Clemons.

Returning to Notre Dame in 1998, Robert taught graphic design with an emphasis on the power of design to inspire social justice. For his teaching, research, and outreach, he was awarded several honors from Notre Dame, including the Alumni Association’s Rev. Anthony J. Lauck, CSC Award, The Center for Social Concerns’ Rodney F. Ganey, Ph.D., Faculty Community-Based Research Award, The College of Arts and Letters’ Sheedy Excellence in Teaching Award and the University’s Presidential Award.

Shortly before his death he became a full professor in the department of art, art history and design.

Robert left an indelible mark on the ND campus as a mentor, a teacher, a leader and friend. Robert cared deeply about social issues far and wide. He dedicated much of his design efforts toward making lives better for those who needed it most. Robert always made time to assist others in achieving their own dreams and his impact was felt by anyone who had the good fortune of knowing him in any aspect of his life. He also used design talents in positive outreaches in the South Bend community where he lived with his wife Theresa and son Robert Pierce III “Trey” and daughter Emma Catherine.
