DePauw women win NCAC pair

MEADVILLE, Pa. — DePauw scored the game’s first nine points and never trailed on the way to a 73-38 North Coast Athletic Conference win at Allegheny. The Tigers improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the NCAC, while the Gators dropped to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

The Tigers closed the first quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 22-9 lead and then opened the second period with a 16-2 stretch to widen the margin to 27. DePauw shot 72 percent from the field in the second period on the way to a 52-18 halftime lead.

Claire Ryan led the Tigers with 16 points and five steals, while freshman Sydney Kopp added 14 including three three-pointers.

Taylor Howard followed with her second straight double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds along with five assists. Blair Carlin also added five assists in the win.

DePauw shot 42.0 percent from the floor, while Allegheny connected on 23.0 percent. The Tigers held a commanding 55-36 edge on the boards.

On Friday at Hiram, Ohio, the Tigers won their North Coast Athletic Conference opener Friday night with a 70-61 victory over Hiram.

DePauw had four players score in double figures, led by Kopp’s 15. Ryan and Howard each scored 13 and Emily Budde added 11 off the bench. Howard also pulled down 11 rebounds for the double-double, while Ryan pulled down five herself and added four assists.

After leading 16-12 after the first quarter, DePauw pulled away in the second to take a 36-22 lead at halftime. In the second half, Hiram cut the lead to 63-60 with three minutes remaining, but DePauw clamped down and finished the game on a 7-1 run.

The Tigers shot 46 percent (29-of-63) from the floor and 38 percent (6-of-16) from beyond the arc. They went to the line just eight times but connected on six of their attempts.

Hiram shot 36 percent from the floor (20-of-56), 29 percent from beyond the arc (7-of-24) and 88 percent (14-of-16) from the charity stripe.

DePauw outrebounded Hiram 36-31 and scored 23 points off Hiram’s 16 turnovers. DePauw also outscored Hiram 17-11 on second chance points and 19-11 on bench points.

The Tigers return to action on Wednesday when they host Wittenberg at 7:30 p.m.

Men

Ohio Wesleyan 84, DePauw 71 — Ohio Wesleyan made just three more field goals than DePauw on Saturday, but connected on 17 3-pointers to take a win in DePauw’s North Coast Athletic Conference opener.

The Battling Bishops (3-3, 1-0 NCAC) entered shooting 29 percent from beyond the arc but shot 45 percent on Saturday and 47 percent from the field (29-of-62). DePauw (2-4, 0-1) entered at 42 percent from the arc but made just 21 percent (4-of-19) of their attempts and finished the game shooting 42 percent from the field (26-of-62).

Luke Lattner led the Tigers with 19 points and eight rebounds. Jack VandeMerkt was a rebound shy of the double-double at 18 points and nine rebounds.

DePauw outrebounded Ohio Wesleyan 38-31 and outscored them in the paint 34-22 and off the bench 20-19. Ohio Wesleyan had eight fast break points to DePauw’s two.

DePauw looks to get back in the win column Wednesday at Wittenberg.

Indiana 83, SE Missouri State 55 — At Bloomington, Robert Johnson had 17 points and seven rebounds and De’Ron Davis added 14 points to help No. 13 Indiana rout Southeast Missouri State on Sunday.

The Hoosiers (7-1) have won four straight, all in the last seven days.

Indiana took advantage of Southeast Missouri State’s early shooting struggles to jump to a 17-2 lead.

The Hoosiers get a well-deserved break before suiting up Saturday when they host Houston Baptist.
