Sullivan gets sweep over North Putnam

ROACHDALE — North Putnam came out on the short end of a pair of matchups of struggling teams Friday evening.

In the girls’ game, Sullivan topped North Putnam 46-12. In the boys’ contest, the Golden Arrows defeated the Cougars in a closer affair, 50-44.

The Sullivan girls came into the game with a five-game losing streak and a 1-8 record.

Knotted at 2-2 for about three minutes early on, the game took a turn for the worse for the Cougars (0-10) as Sullivan began to heat up and put some pressure on the young Cougar team.

Sullivan forced six turnovers and allowed only two points in the opening quarter.

The Arrows picked up were they left off in the second quarter, forcing the Cougars into eight turnovers and again allowing just two points.

Sullivan led 24-4 at the break.

After the half the young Cougar team had their best quarter of the game, scoring six points and only turning it over three times.

Sullivan then ramped the defense back up and forced North into seven fourth-quarter turnovers and only allowed two points to be scored.

Mia Runnells led the Cougars with five points, follwed by Emily Henninger with four.

Regan Holeman led the Golden Arrows with 10 points.

The second game of the night was a little better competition between two teams struggling to find wins ont he young season.

North Putnam (1-4) started the game on a 6-0 run and did not look back in that quarter. The Cougars got out and ran when they could, leading 15-6 after the opening period.

Junior Treyton Smith and senior Dylan Webster led the attack early with four points each in the first.

The aggressive Cougar defense forced four turnovers in the first quarter.

Coming into the second quarter the North crowd was into the game but not for long as Sullivan hit three treys and had a total of 17 points, on the strength of a pair of threes from Trevor Magill.

The Cougars still led at the half, but in a much closer 26-23 game.

Sullivan came out of the break firing, going on a 6-2 run to take the lead.

The Arrows forced some turnovers and made the Cougar offense uncomfortable.

The Coguars stormed back with a run of their own, with Smith and senior Corbin Judy hitting a pair of threes in the waning minutes of the third.

The Cougars trailed by just one after three at 37-36.

They could never get over the hump, though, as Sullivan widened the lead in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Cougars 13-8 for a 50-44 victory.

The Arrows wore the Cougars down and made them take some tough shots in the late stages of the game.

Sullivan also got to the free throw line, shooting 5-8.

Putting up contested shots in the last 3-4 minutes, the Cougars could not make a dent in the lead.

Preston Porter led the Cougars with 11 points, followed closedly by Judy with 10 and Smith with nine.

Evan Conner had 13 for the Golden Arrows.
