Tiger Sharks sweep county swim meets

Greencastle won both the boys’ and girls’ titles on Saturday in the Putnam County swimming meet at DePauw University.

The Tiger Sharks won the girls’ meet with 269 team points, with South Putnam in second with 176 points and North Putnam third with 144.

The boys’ meet was much closer, with Greencastle placing first with 241 and North Putnam second with 209. South Putnam came in third with 148 points.

“The Tiger Sharks just swam great, from the start to finish of the meet,” Greencastle coach Kent Menzel said. “The seniors were superb, with both Nathan Gobert (50 and 100 free) and Ceclia Pohlar (200 IM and 100 fly) each recording two championship swims.”

Menzel was also pleased with several freshman competitors.

“Another great story for us was our ninth-grade swimmers who had amazing swims,” Menzel said, noting the performances of Dalton Matthews, Oliver MacKenzie, Kaitlyn Dibble and Lavender Crockford. “Grace Gillen continued her excellent swimming with another pair of event wins in the 200 free and 500 free.

“We learned a lot about the capabilities of our team that we can use as we plan ahead for the other championship meets of the season,” he added.
