Lauren Meek is a three-sport athlete at Cloverdale — competing in volleyball, basketball and softball — who is also ranked in the top five of her class academically. Last spring, she was the Putnam County “Pitcher of the Year.” She is active in National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, was the school Wendy’s Heisman Award winner, and was a finalist for the Owen County Community Foundation scholarship.”

Banner Graphic: How did you get interested in playing softball?

Lauren Meek: “It started when I was 8, and I would always be the youngest player on the team playing ‘up’. One of my fall ball coaches asked me if I wanted to play travel ball, and I’ve been doing it ever since.”

BG: What are your strengths as a pitcher?

LM: “They have always told me I’m not the biggest person out there, and I’ve always focused on spinning the ball and placing it where I want to put it.”

BG: How does this year shape up in softball?

LM: “We lost Kim Winders, and she was a really good player, but we have everyone else back and we should be able to compete well.”

BG: What other kinds of things do you do besides school and sports?

LM: “I like to read. Any kind of books, preferably fiction, but I also like to read some sports nonfiction. Recently I read Friday Night Lights.” I also spend time with my dog, Lucy. She’s a lab. I like country music, and I also like a little bit of alternative music. My favorite TV shows are medical shows.”

BG: What is something you have never done that you would like to do someday?

LM: “I would like to visit a foreign country. I would like to go to Spain or Italy.”

BG: What are your plans for after high school?

LM: “I am going to attend the University of Southern Indiana and major in nursing, and eventually go on to graduate school to be a nurse practitioner.”

BG: Do you plan to play softball there?

LM: “I’m going to try to walk on if I don’t get a scholarship. I would like to play college softball if it works out.”

BG: How has your Cloverdale experience been?

LM: “It’s been great, but it’s gone really fast. It seems like we just started, and we’re already on winter break in our senior year. I love Cloverdale, and it’s a really great school and community with really great people.”

BG: Have any specific teachers helped you to get where you are academically?

LM: “Mr. [Doug] Wokoun, my psychology teacher, has filled out numerous recommendations for me and done a great job with all of them.”
