Steve Cash

On the event of his last meeting, the South Putnam School Board presented Vice President Steve Cash with a plaque recognizing his 23-1/2 years of service.

"As all of you know -- Steve, you've got to stand up here -- as all of you know, this is Steve's last school board meeting, Superintendent Bruce Bernhardt said. "So on behalf of the school board, we want to thank you for your service these many years and we have a plaque that we present to you. So, Steve, we want to congratulate you and thank you so much for your service."

Cash thanked God and many people -- including his wife, his constituency and past and current board members -- for the enjoyment of his service and the opportunities it has brought him, such as attending national school board conventions and state conferences.

Jill McCammack, an audience member and teacher from Fillmore Elementary School, commented at the end of the meeting, "I'd like to thank Steve for many years, especially from Fillmore (Elementary School). We wouldn't be a school if it wasn't for Steve Cash. Because I love where I work."

Cash will be succeeded by Holly Hutcheson, who introduced herself at the meeting, in January.

In other developments:

-- Bass Fishing Club: Nick Teeters, coach of the South Putnam Bass Fishing Club, delivered a report on the team's progress this year. He said that 25 students attended a call-out meeting in September, and the team now has a total of 18 anglers with the potential for two more to join later. All anglers from last year, except one who graduated and is now a member of the Purdue University team, have returned.

Membership dues were increased to $120 per angler to help cover expenses, and parents have been as helpful as last year. Coach Teeters also said he has been approached by Greencastle, Cascade and Cloverdale high schools about starting teams at those schools.

"I couldn't have done a lot of this without Principal (Mike) Schimpf," Coach Teeters said. "He has been phenomenal. He has helped me out with all kinds of things from the call-outs to the meetings. He has been a huge help and very supportive, and I know from hearing the other coaches that a lot of other schools are not that way."

-- Claims: The board approved claims at a total of $1,201,921.37, an increase from last month of $487,562.11 and of $499,441.14 from the March - December average. The increase was due to lease rental payments on construction bonds, which are made every six months.

-- Fund transfers: The board approved the year-end inter- and intra-fund transfers.

"This is an annual request where, at the end of the calendar year, we do -- within our funds -- we do moving around of our appropriations that each fund is given to balance each account," Superintendent Bernhardt said.

-- Personnel: The board approved the hiring of Teresa Trout as assistant swim coach for the middle/high school.

-- Students of the Month: December Students of the Month were Kelsey Dilley (fourth grade, Central Elementary), Stiles Stauch (second grade, Fillmore Elementary), Brock Heavin (sixth grade) and Nathan Games (freshman).

The next South Putnam School Board meeting will be Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Central Elementary School music room.
