Area 30 Career Center students and staff of the Civil Engineering and Architecture program thank Spiker Excavating Inc. and homeowners Dr. Wayne and Kathy Lewis for allowing access to their home while it was under construction for the last few months.

The Area 30 program began making weekly home site visits in September to see the Lewises’ home built from foundation to completion. Each week program instructor Mr. Hinners walked the students through the home and discussed what progress was made, pointing out topics that they had discussed in the classroom.

The on-site staff from Spiker Excavation Inc. also participated in some of the discussions to give a better understanding of a specific process. The Civil Engineering and Architecture program hopes to visit more local projects in the future.

“I believe it’s important for aspiring students to see the construction site firsthand, to really understand the complexities of how design and engineering affect a product like someone’s home,” Hinners said. “Understanding the relationship from one scheduled activity to the next, and the impact on time and budget is critical to today’s fast paced production expectations.”
