Sunday, January 8, 2017

ROACHDALE — North Putnam’s boys’ basketball team was back at home Saturday night after almost three weeks on the road.

The Cougars, coming off a three-game losing streak, hosted the Falcons of North Vermillion on a night that Cougar head coach Collin McCartt could get his 100th win of his coaching career and were looking for a big win.

The Cougars achieved both of those goals, jumping out to a 14-2 lead after one quarter on their way to a 54-30 victory.

Junior Elliot Gross started the fire for the Cougars, going 5 for 5 with 10 of the 14 points in the opening period. The Cougar defense played extremely well in the opening period, only allowing two points and forcing six turnovers.

Seniors Corbin Judy and Preston Porter scored the other four points in the opening quarter. The second quarter started the same way for the Cougars, scoring 14 points and only allowing three points and forcing four turnovers. The Cougars missed a lot of opportunities, committing five turnovers themselves.

North Vermillion won the third quarter, outscoring the Cougars 14-13 and forcing the Cougars to turn the ball over seven times. The Cougars then started slowing down in the fourth to run some time off the clock to eventually get coach McCartt his 100th win.
