Fred L. Harris

Fred L. Harris, 81, of New Ross, went home to be with Jesus on Sunday morning, Jan. 8, 2017.

He worked 37 years at Union Carbide, retiring in 1992 as office manager. He was a member of Woodland Heights and was a past elder.

He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1956-1958.

An avid outdoorsman, he loved fishing, trapping, hunting and gardening. He also loved IU basketball, playing cards and sports of all kinds. Mostly, he loved being with his grandchildren and teaching them things.

Born May 5, 1935 in Crawfordsville, he was the son of Ernest Lewis Harris and Alice Boller Tate. He graduated from New Ross High School in 1954.

On July 5, 1959, he married Janet Rusk in Hillsboro. She survives.

He was loved by his surviving family, which includes wife Janet Harris of New Ross; daughter Julann (Michael) Gray of Crawfordsville; sons Jesse (Adela) Harris of Crawfordsville and Matthew (Michelle) Harris of Adrian, Mo.; seven grandkids, Shelby, Amanda, Travis, Hunter, Logan, Dakota and Gage; sister Sue Dodd; and sister-in-law Joyce Harris.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Harris.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Woodland Heights Christian Church. Services will be at the church on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with Tony Thomas and Steve Wilke officiating. Burial will follow at New Ross Cemetery.
