Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 1 p.m. Saturday

Thursday, January 12, 2017

All of Putnam County is included in a Winter Weather Advisory for freezing rain issued Thursday afternoon by the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.

The advisory has been issued for most of central Indiana beginning 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13 until 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14.

The primary threat during that time period will be freezing rain, which could make Friday evening and early Saturday travels a struggle.

Rain will begin mixing with and changing to freezing rain Friday evening. A brief mix with sleet or snow is also possible in areas north of Interstate 70 Friday evening.

Ice accumulation up to .15 of an inch is possible in some areas which will be enough to make bridges/overpasses and untreated roadways treacherous.

A few degrees can mean the difference between rain or snow, so freezing rain and ice can be difficult for forecasters to pinpoint far in advance.

In addition to Putnam, the advisory includes the counties of Bartholomew, Brown, Clay, Daviess, Decatur, Greene, Hancock, Hendricks, Henry, Jackson, Jennings, Johnson, Knox, Lawrence, Marion, Martin, Monroe, Morgan, Owen, Parke, Rush, Shelby, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo.

The Indiana Department of Transportation will continue monitoring multiple weather forecasts and readying yellow salt trucks to treat interstates, U.S. highways and state routes.

If a storm is predicted lead off with frost or other freezing weather, INDOT sprays a saltwater brine as pre-treatment. If a storm is predicted to start with rain, salt trucks will treat the roads just before pavement temperatures fall below freezing and the snow and ice begin to accumulate.
