Georgia Elizabeth Evens Sublette

Georgia Elizabeth Evens Sublette, 101, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2017 at Independence Court.

She was born on her grandparents' farm in Putnam County, Ind., on Feb. 23, 1915 to the late Roy and Hazel (Haymaker) Evens.

She enjoyed her early years in the country, later attending Putnamville School and graduating from Greencastle High School in 1933.

She worked as a secretary for the Putnam County agricultural agent and for the Putnam County superintendent of schools, retiring from her position as payroll clerk at DePauw University in 1985.

Georgia married David G. Sublette in 1936 and resided in historic Putnamville until recent years when she moved near her son's home in Erie, Pa.

She was a member of the Putnamville United Methodist Church all of her life and contributed generously by singing in the choir, playing piano, and serving multiple terms as secretary of UMW.

Georgia was the inspiration for the Dr. Horn/Putnamville Museum and generously shared pictures and memorabilia collected over her many years in the community.

Family and friends remember, with joy, Georgia's wit, wisdom and kindness. Her enthusiasm and her love of music, dancing, jokes, and card playing will not be forgotten.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband and siblings Naoma Evens, Ruth Gostage and Arthur Lowell Evens.

Survivors include her son, David Lynn Sublette and his wife, Dr. Rebecca Kightlinger; three grandchildren, Teresa (James) Nelson, Elizabeth, and William Sublette; two great-grandchildren, James and Olivia; her half-sister, Gayle Halleck and her mother, Rena Webster, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2 at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, Greencastle, with interment to follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until time of service on Thursday at the funeral home.
