John Leon Best, 86, of Greencastle, passed away peacefully at his home, Jan. 29, 2017.

John was born May 17, 1930 in Clay County to William and Inez (Trout) Best.

He worked for many years for Public Service, before retirement in 1990. In addition to his work at Public Service, he was a long-time farmer and raised hogs; his favorite quote when touring the farm was always “Smells like money!”

In addition to his professional career, he served for many years with the Reelsville Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of the Reelsville Lions Club.

In addition to his loving wife, Georgia (Johnson) Best, he is survived by his sister, Esther Taylor; daughters Shirley Warren, Sue Benassi (husband Bob) and Debbie Underwood (husband Randy); granddaughters Denise Wiles, Diana Campbell (husband Randy), Jenny Sutherlin (husband Travis) and Jill Albers (husband Aaron); and great-grandchildren Kayla, Christopher, Morgan, Camryn, Vanessa, Brayden, Owen and Bailey.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers Ed Trout, Squire Fritz Jr., Frank Best Kendall and Ralph Best.

Funeral Services will be take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017 in Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, with calling there from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral. He will be laid to rest in Forest Hill Cemetery.
