Sheriff’s Department

A Terre Haute man was taken into custody on Friday in an unrelated case following a wreck that snapped a utility pole.

At 6:23 a.m., Criss V. Nelson, 36, Terre Haute, was northbound on Manhattan Road near County Road 300 West in a 1990 Chevrolet Caprice.

Nelson told Deputy Virgil Lanning as he entered a curve, the car slid off the left side of the road due to ice. The car hit a pole, breaking it and causing downed power lines.

The vehicle was towed and damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

However, deputies discovered that Nelson had an unresolved case in Putnam Superior Court.

In August 2016, Nelson was cited for driving without ever receiving a license. He apparently never responded to his summons, failing to appear for his December initial hearing.

An arrest warrant was subsequently issued in the case, and Lanning served the warrant on Friday, with Nelson booked in the Putnam County Jail at 7:44 a.m.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to two other recent property damage crashes.

• At 3:47 a.m. on Friday, John W. Freeman, 54, McCordsville, was westbound on Interstate 70 in a 2005 Ford F150 when he encountered an ice-covered bridge near the 41-mile mark.

Maj. Dwight Simmons reported that the vehicle began spinning after crossing the bridge, entering the median and getting lodged in the cable barrier at the rear axle.

The vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

Simmons was assisted by Deputy Anthony Brown.

• At 7:10 a.m. on Thursday, Larry Manion, 47, Brazil, was southbound on U.S. 231 north of County Road 100 North in a 2012 Volve semi tractor registered to GFS Transport of Fort Wayne. Manion told Lt. Donnie Pettit he saw a trash truck off the right side of the road with its rear flashers on.

Manion said he followed the vehicle in front of him around the trash truck but didn’t realize how close he was. The passenger side mirror of Manion’s truck struck the driver’s side mirror of the trash truck.

The 2007 International trash truck, registered to Jack’s Trash Service, was driven by James B. Wood, 45, Greencastle. Wood told Pettit that Manion’s semi did not brake and continued southbound until it pulled over in the parking lot of the Fairway restaurant.

Damage was less than $1,000.
