BAINBRIDGE -- In light of the cancellation of a recent middle school basketball game due to the lack of an athletic director, the North Putnam school board decided Friday during a special session to name Bucky Kramer as a temporary “coordinator of athletics” so as to avoid any more issues until a new director is found.

Kramer is currently a teacher and the head coach for wrestling at North Putnam High School.

Having submitted a resignation to depart from his position on Jan. 30, former athletic director Tim Garver oversaw both high school and middle school athletic events. However, until the search for a new athletic director is complete, the board chose to handle the schools separately for the time being.

Referees and other necessities for athletic events at the high school have been set by Garver for the foreseeable future, as reported from a recent interview by the Banner Graphic (www.bannergraphic.com/story/2379011), but his departure left the middle school scrambling for a replacement, albeit temporary, to coordinate schedules and hire officials.

Scott Miller, principal of North Putnam Middle School, expressed the need for a quick replacement Friday and recommended that Kramer take up the position until the end of the school year. Kramer’s subsequent approval also entails half of the $5,000 typically owed to a middle-school athletic director since he will only maintain the position for one semester.

With only minor changes made to the next athletic director’s job description, relevant to salary (contingent on prior experience), benefits and minor-word changes in the contract, board president Amber Greene moved to approve said description, passing via 5-2 vote.

In other business:

• A job description for the replacement of a corporate attorney was discussed and resulted in the formation of a three-member committee which will meet today (Monday, Feb. 6) to begin deliberations. The committee is made up of Travis Lambermont, Ron Spencer and Greene with consultation from Superintendent Dan Noel.

• Instead of forming a job description for an architect to work on the High School Building Project, the board decided it will form a job description for a “design-build consultant” and will present the description at the next regularly-scheduled board meeting.

• After considerable discussion concerning the makeup of job descriptions for the positions of general contractor and clerk of the works, the board decided to table these items until the next regularly-scheduled board meeting.

• The board formally accepted the resignation, hiring and transfer of a handful of employees Friday. They were: Tim Garver, resignation as athletic director (effective Jan. 30); Chelsey Smith, resignation as head golf coach at NPMS; Earl Hall, hire as head golf coach at NPMS; Kelli Warf, hire as instructional assistant at NPHS; Kevin Lutes, hire as girls’ head track coach at NPHS; Bonnie Osborn, hire as girls’ head track coach at NPMS and head volleyball coach at NPHS; Susan Trent, hire as assistant swim coach at NPMS; and Bob Curran, transfer from part-time custodian to full-time custodian at Bainbridge Elementary.

The next regularly-scheduled board meeting will take place within the high school’s auditorium on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m.
