Cubs draw Athenians; NP, SP both get byes

Monday, February 20, 2017

Both sectional boys’ basketball tournaments involving Putnam County teams will be played in the county, starting on Feb. 28.

At South Putnam, Cloverdale enters with the best record at 18-6 but faces a Southmont team in the second game of the tourney which handily beat the Clovers in December.

North Putnam and South Putnam each drew a first-round bye and will open play on Friday night in the semifinals.

South Putnam plays the winner of Monrovia-Cascade (two 13-8 teams) and North Putnam meets the Southmont-Cloverdale victor.

At Greencastle, the host Tiger Cubs open the seven-team tourney in the only game on the first night against Crawfordsville.

The Athenians defeated the Tiger Cubs 54-38 in the season opener in November.

The winner will play Tri-West (with the field’s best record at 18-3) in the semifinals on Friday night.
