Accused of stabbing his estranged wife multiple times in a Feb. 23 incident, a Greencastle man was calm and composed as he made his initial appearance in Putnam Circuit Court Tuesday morning.

Appearing via video before Judge Matt Headley, 41-year-old Glenn D. Sanders Jr. learned that he faces up to 56 years in prison for a pair of felonies.

Sanders faces one count of Level 1 felony attempted murder and one count of Level 3 felony aggravated battery related to the Thursday evening stabbing of Sherri A. Sanders at a Cloverdale residence.

The victim was airlifted to Indianapolis after the incident and remained hospitalized as of Tuesday morning.

The Level 1 felony charge, if convicted, carries with it a sentence of 20 to 40 years and a fine of up to $10,000. A Level 3 felony carries a sentencing range of three to 16 years and another possible $10,000 fine.

His tone respectful and even, Sanders advised the judge he understood the charges and there was no reason to review them in greater detail.

“You don’t need to, sir,” Sanders said.

Headley then entered not-guilty pleas to both charges on Sanders’ behalf.

Advising he had no assets with which to hire counsel, Sanders requested a court-appointed attorney. After asking a few questions, Headley appointed public defender Sidney Tongret to the case.

Citing the severity of the accusations, Headley agreed with Prosecutor Tim Bookwalter’s request that $50,000 cash bond be set in the case.

Headley also issued a no-contact order with Sanders’ estranged wife.

Sanders is alleged to have entered the Cloverdale home where his wife was staying before stabbing her multiple times in the legs and lower torso.

He then fled the residence but was found and detained later that evening by Owen County deputies.

Putnam County deputies then arrested Sanders and booked him in the Putnam County Jail.

Sanders is slated for a preliminary hearing before Headley at 10 a.m. on April 20.
