Sea Scouting venture due to set sail March 7 at Heritage Lake Clubhouse

Thursday, March 2, 2017

In late 2016, the Heritage Lake Board of Directors approved a community request to sponsor a Sea Scout Ship (unit) for the older youth of Heritage Lake and the general Putnam County area.

For more than 100 years, Sea Scouting has promoted better citizenship and improved members’ boating skills through instruction and practice in water safety, boating skills, outdoor, social, service experiences and knowledge of our maritime heritage.

The Sea Scout unit is called a Ship. The local group will be the first Ship in west-central Indiana and only the third in central Indiana.

Other Ships are established all around the country on oceans, bays, rivers and lakes. They provide limitless opportunities and exciting challenges not found anywhere else.

Sea Scouts is an older youth program of the Boys Scouts of America. It is a youth-led organization. The youth will develop their own program, elect their own leaders and carry out their plans.

Adults serve as advisers, counselors and consultants to the ship. Imagine sailing The Caribbean, cruising to Alaska, fishing, swimming, diving, scuba and high adventure activities or anything else your Ship wants to do. Participants will even have an opportunity to meet Sea Scouts from other parts of their community, the nation and even the world.

Sea Scouts is open to all youth -- boys and girls -- age 14-21 (or 13 and having completed eighth grade).

Two recruiting events with sign-up opportunity are scheduled at the Heritage Lake Clubhouse, 1000 Clubhouse, Coatesville, IN 46121 on Tuesday, March 7 from 6:30-8 p.m. and Saturday, March 11 from 2-4:30 p.m.

All activities related to starting the Ship will be completed in March and regular meetings will begin shortly thereafter.
