For the final performance on the Faculty Select Series this season, the DePauw Chamber Players — May Phang, piano; Tarn Travers, violin; and Eric Edberg, cello — invite local music lovers to join them downtown at Music on the Square (21 N. Indiana St.), on Monday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m.

The one-hour program they have planned will pair the B Major Piano Trio by Johannes Brahms, one of the most-loved chamber works of all time, with “Cafe Music,” a distinctly different, jazzy Broadway and gypsy-inspired composition by Paul Schoenfield.

“The Brahms was one of the first pieces of chamber music that I fell in love with as a kid,” said Travers, who is now in his second season with the Chamber Players. “The opening really is one of the most stunningly beautiful moments in the major chamber music repertoire. It’s the kind of thing that just grabs your attention and won’t let go.

“The piece itself is quite an emotional journey and is really unique in that most of it is so happy, though perhaps a little bittersweet. Warm and open, but also dark and stormy. It is one of my favorite works, from beginning to end.”

“The second piece, ‘Cafe Music,’ couldn’t be more different,” Travers continued. “It is just so much fun and draws from so many different types of music. It’s a blast to play and a blast to listen to.”

Schoenfield himself described his work as “high-class dinner music ... which could be played at a restaurant, but might also (just barely) find its way into a concert hall.”

Music on the Square fits the creator’s prerogatives for preferred venues pretty closely. Not too posh — but with comfy chairs and great acoustics.

General admission to this Faculty Select Series concert is $10. Tickets for seniors, children and all students, are free, thanks to season sponsors Judson and Joyce Green. To obtain advance tickets online, visit www.music.depauw.edu.
