Report: All good things at Area 30

After the culinary arts team qualified for the ProStart/FCCLA nationals recently, other Area 30 teams have also done well.

The Super Mileage Club, 14 students and five instructors, is set to compete at the Engineering/Technology Educators of the Indiana Super Mileage Challenge April 9-10 at Lucas Oil Raceway. Also, 40 SkillsUSA students and seven instructors will be attending their regional competition set for April 21-22 in Indianapolis.

Director Lora Busch has also announced that Area 30 received a 2003 Crown Victoria from Greencastle City Police and Assistant Director Chad Nunley said the Putnamville Correctional Facility has donated 24 bikes to be shared among the five school corporations (Cloverdale, Eminence, Greencastle, North Putnam and South Putnam).

In other developments:

-- Adult Education Grant: The board approved submitting the adult education grant, in the amount of $131,000, to the Department of Workforce Development.

-- Claims: The board approved claims at a total of $176,492.22, a decrease from last month of $48,461.56 and of $24,230.78 from the year’s average.

-- Computer Science Summer Camp: So far three students have enrolled in the Computer Science Summer Camp set for June 12-16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for students ages 13-17. Two of the students are from Greencastle Schools and one from North Putnam. Each of the five school corporations has three available slots, leaving one for Greencastle and two for North Putnam.

-- Tox-Away Day: The board approved the annual Tox-Away Day for May 6 in the Area 30 parking lot. The event is sponsored by West Central Solid Waste District.

The next Area 30 Governing Board meeting will be April 11 at 9 a.m. at the Area 30 Career Center.
