PUTNAMVILLE — Plans are in place to repair and reopen a 19th-century iron bridge in Warren Township — and for less than $50,000.

Putnam County Highway Supervisor Mike Ricketts told the county commissioners on Monday that Bridge 187, closed March 17, can be repaired beginning in two weeks.

The 112-foot span, built in 1890 across Doe Creek, will be repaired by Keith Henderson for a cost of $47,900.

Ricketts reported that the work will begin in about two weeks. In the meantime, County Road 25 East remains closed just north of U.S. 40.

The bridge was closed after failing a recent inspection.

Asked by commissioners about the 6-ton weight limit on the bridge, Ricketts said he believes it will remain the same following the repairs.

Another road closure, this one for utility work, could have a temporary effect on two industries east of Fillmore.

Ricketts told the commissioners he has been contacted by Marathon Pipeline Co. regarding a right-of-way permit on County Road 100 North, east of Dixie Chopper.

Pipeline repair will require the closure of the road as Marathon excavates an 8-foot section of the road.

No closure date has been determined, but special notification needs to be given to both Dixie Chopper and Liberty Industries, both of which are serviced by semi traffic that uses 100 North to get from State Road 75 to the plants east of Fillmore.

The date of the closure will be announced once it is determined.

In other business:

• Commissioners approved a $5,000 change order for the federal aid project on Bridge 248 in Jackson Township.

The added cost will provide for additional paving on the south end of the bridge.

• Ricketts gave a preliminary cost estimate on Bridge 65 in Floyd Township, which carries County Road 400 North over Miller Creek.

The bridge deck will cost $49,690, plus concrete. The county will not move forward until the concrete cost is determined.
