Evert Dale Gerhardt, 79, of Greencastle, died Tuesday, April 4, 2017.

He was born on Oct. 19, 1937 in St. Elmo, Ill., to Herbert Gerhardt and Inez (Pease) Watson. He was raised in Effingham, Ill.

He moved with wife Doris (Buchhorn) Gerhardt to Greencastle in 1964. They celebrated 55 years of marriage on Feb. 10, 2017.

He worked as a janitor at the Putnam County Hospital for 26 years, retiring in 1993.

Evert was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in July 1957 in Milwaukee, Wis. He later served as an assistant congregation overseer, account servant, and ministerial servant in the congregation. He also had the privilege of attending the landmark 1958 convention of Jehovah's Witnesses at Yankee Stadium in New York.

He was a member of the Greencastle Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Evert was preceded in death by his grandparents, Nettie and Bill Pease; father Herbert Gerhardt; mother Inez Watson; sister Betty Fulk; and a nephew, Bobby Goldtrap.

Surviving are his wife, Doris Gerhardt; son, Luke (Danielle) Gerhardt; grandson, Richard Gerhardt; niece, Vicky Mounteer; and half-brothers, Wallace and Tim Gerhardt.

Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday April 8 with visitation starting at 2 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Greencastle.
