Eagles sweep NP; Cougars rout Rox

Thursday, April 13, 2017

South Putnam tuned up for Saturday’s Putnam County tournament this week by defeating North Putnam in two one-run high school baseball games, winning 3-2 on Tuesday and 2-1 on Wednesday to stay undefeated on the season.

On Tuesday, North Putnam led 2-1 after two innings, but the Eagles got single runs in the third and fourth innings to hold on for the victory.

Dylan Wood had a triple and a single for the Eagles, while Tanner Pistelli had a single and two RBI and Kyle Hall had a double and a single while Lance Bush each added two singles.

“I am exceedingly proud of the effort from South in this game,” South Putnam coach Brady Rhodes said. “We had a game plan to limit our number of pitches and play solid, fundamental defense in order to get our first conference win and also prepare us to compete for a county championship on Saturday and we were able to fully execute that game plan.”

Rhodes respects North Putnam and feels good about the victory.

“North Putnam is a good ball team and the defending county champions,” South Putnam coach Brady Rhodes said. “We knew coming into this game that we would need to be focused and command the game from the mound. We left some runners on at a few points, but good teams find a way to win even if they can’t fully capitalize on each opportunity and we did that.”

Rhodes was pleased with the pitching performance of Britton and Dylan Wood.

“They did a phenomenal job and the defense behind them did as well,” he said. “We will win a lot of ball games this season if we continue to execute in this fashion.”

In Wednesday’s game, the Eagles got the first run in the fourth inning, but North Putnam tied it with one of their own in the top of the sixth. The Eagles pushed the winning run across the plate in the bottom of the sixth, and held North Putnam in the top of the seventh to record the win.

South Putnam’s four hits were all of the extra-base variety, with Hunter Croan, Kody Britton and Lance Bush each getting a double and Kyle Hall hitting a home run. Britton also had an RBI.

Cloverdale 6, Brown County 3 — Jarron Rossok got the win as the Clovers opened Western Indiana Conferfence play with a win.

Parker Watts picked up the save, and added four walks and four stolen bases.

Haiden Davis had a double and single among Cloverdale’s eight hits.

West Vigo 10, Greencastle 0 — At West Terre Haute, Louisiana-Monroe signee Ty Lautenschlager of the No. 8-ranked Vikings pitched a no-hitter to defeat the Tiger Cubs.

Greencastle coach Ben Wells said the game was a “perfect example” that a box score does not tell the whole story.

“Overall I was very pleased with how the team played,” Wells said. “Jackie [Scanland] started on the mound for us and really did a good job of working the strike zone. He made one mistake in the first but did a nice job of settling down and getting us through the next two innings.”

Wells noted that a couple of defensive errors led to a big inning by the Vikings.

“In the third we gave up six runs but really should have been out of it with only two,” he said. “There were a few plays that we did not make that gave them some extra opportunities, and against a really good baseball team like West Vigo you just can’t do that.

Wells was still pleased with the overall defensive improvement.

“I was very pleased with how Gus Manion played at third and Trey Wood showed some great improvements at first,” he said. “Jordan Meyer really has grown into a solid, everyday second baseman and someone that I have full confidence in to make a play.”

Many of the things the team has been working on have started to show through, Wells added.

“The guys were all up and invested in the game at all times, and we really had some good approaches at the plate,” he said. “This was a great building block game for a young team.”

On Tuesday, the Clovers led 4-3 after four innings but gave up two runs in both the fifth and seventh innings.

“We played a really good game against a very strong Brown County team,” Cloverdale coach Jim Spencer said. “We had our chances to come away with a win, but could not capitalize with timely hitting with runners in scoring position.”

Lauren Meek was the pitcher for the Clovers, with five strikeouts and three walks.

Baylee Hamilton led Cloverdale with a single, home run and three RBI, while Kiley Shedron had two singles, Skylar Price had a single and a double and Tori Combs had a single and a double with an RBI.

On Wednesday, the Clovers got all four of their runs in the first game in the top of the third inning and held on for the win.

Hamilton was the winning pitcher with 11 strikeouts, while Kelsey Helterbrand had two singles and an RBI.

Meek and Macie Couch combined to pitch a shutout in the second game, allowing just four hits between them.

Hamilton, Price and Combs each had a double and a single while Price had three RBI as the Clovers improved to 5-1.

“The first game was just a case of learning how to win the game you are currently playing,” Spencer said. “Fortunately, we were able to make enough plays behind a strong pitching performance from Baylee Hamilton. In game two, Lauren Meek got off to a good start on the mound and our bats came alive which allowed us to put several runs on the board early in the game.”

West Vigo 8, Greencastle 2 — At West Terre Haute, West Vigo got five runs in the bottom of the fifth to expand its lead break open a 3-2 game.

Greencastle coach Tabatha Briones is pleased with the progress of her team despite the defeat.

“In the bottom of the fifth they had three hits,” she said. “We got one of those runners out stealing, however we had two errors and a hit by pitch that allowed the other two hits plus three more to score.”

The Tiger Cubs held the Vikings scoreless the rest of the way behind pitcher Skyler Hensley, but couldn’t push any more runs across the plate.

Layna Robinson had an RBI single for the Tiger Cubs, while Grace Paul and Julia Mundy each added hits.

“Looking forward, I felt our defense was working well together and improved communication and effort,” she said. “We will be working on offensively on hitting strategies to reduce runners left on base and two-strike swings.”

Greencastle 177, West Vigo 184 — Jake Bennett shot a 39 to win medalist honors and pace the Tiger Cubs over the Vikings.

Jaxon Parmley added a 40 for the winners, while Conner Taylor shot a 44, Kyle Tesmer shot a 54 and Brett Sosebee added a 64.

“Jake continues to score well for the Cubs,” Greencastle coach Steve Paquin said. “He played very consistently until his last two holes where he took a bogey on hole 8 and a double on hole nine. Fatigue might have played a role or maybe losing concentration at the end of the round happened.”

Paquin said Parmley played well, but had trouble with three putts on four holes, while freshman Conner Taylor had a “good round” and continues to score well in his first varsity season. “Rounding out the scoring Kyle Tesmer had some good holes and some bad holes, and is gaining experience on the varsity team,” Paquin added. “The weather was much improved and should allow us to get much needed time for practice.”

The Tiger Cubs will play on Saturday in the Mustang Invitational at Cascades Golf Club in Bloomington.

Monrovia 261, North Putnam 281 — At Deer Creek Golf Club, the Cougars opened their season by falling to the Bulldogs.

The first match of the spring was ironically, the first match of the golfing careers for the four young Cougars of North Putnam.

“Two players returned from last year’s team but they were not in the scoring rotation so while they played during matches, their scores were not counted in results,” first-year coach Earl Hall noted. “And for the other two players, they teed it up in their very first form of competition and they were in shock and awe of their first match. But the boys all played hard and they kept their composure and I believe they saw the things they need to improve upon as the season progresses.

Marcus Burdine paced North Putnam with a 66, while Peyton Myers added a 69, R.J. Batchelor had a 71 and Zane Mason had a 74.

The Cougars play Monday against Tri-West at Quail Creek.

Danville 185, South Putnam 211 — At Twin Bridges, South Putnam’s Tyler Hicks and Danvllle’s Brett Widner tied for medalist honors with 43s as the Warriors won the match.

“Our No. 1 singles and doubles struggled, but I was proud of their ‘never say die’ attitude,” coach Johnny Briones said. “Meredith had a solid performance, and I’m feeling good about her game. This was a big win for Kaylee, and she’s made huge strides towards dealing with the mental part of the game.”

Briones noted that Ladd and Blaydes had another “great” performance.

“Their match was the deciding factor in the team win in dramatic fashion,” he said. “They came from behind after being down 1-5 n the tiebreaker, and pulled out the win. I am very proud of them.”
