Relay for Life event set for Saturday at Blackstock Stadium

Tuesday, April 18, 2017

The annual Putnam County Relay for Life event -- a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society -- is set for Saturday, April 22 at DePauw University’s Blackstock Stadium.

The 12-hour event -- staged from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. -- will feature local teams and university groups walking the track and competing in activities and events to raise funds to fight cancer.

Funds raised through Relay For Life events help realize the American Cancer Society’s mission: To save lives and celebrate life. Every day.

Donations are used to fund lifesaving cancer research, patient support programs, prevention information and education, and detection and treatment programs.

One in three women and one in two men in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, the American Cancer Society notes. One of those people could be you or someone you love. That’s why participants join relay.

“Just Keep Fighting” is the theme of this year’s Putnam County event. Opening ceremonies are set for 11 a.m. with a cancer survivors’ first lap planned.

One of the new events this year is a “Sing for a Cure” vocal contest from 6-8 p.m. with open auditions beginning at 6. The singing contest is open to individuals, duos and groups. Entry fee is a free-will donation.

The “Sing for a Cure” winner will be determined by a “penny vote” using loose change similar to how the Putnam County Star competition is conducted at the fair.

For more information, persons may call Nicole Stanley at 720-2657 or contact her online at nicolestanley02@yahoo.com.

Stanley is also the contact for those interested in purchasing a Relay for Life T-shirt carrying the slogan “Fight Like a Girl.” The cost is $15 for sizes from children’s to 2x. All shirts 3x and above will be an extra dollar per shirt.

  • Personally I miss the old days when it was 24hrs outside and the place was packed. So much fun back then. I do realize it's not all about the fun it's about raising money, but from what I have heard the amount raised is not as much as it use to be. So sad!

  • Definitely worth coming to see the competition dance team perform!!

putnamcountyproud: I agree, it would be nice if this could be a 24 hour event like it was in the past, but I think the problem is it's hard to find enough volunteers anymore to help and the interest has fallen tremendously over the last few years. It's really sad. I hope whoever is in charge now and in the future can come up with a good plan to make it what it used to be.
