Tiger Cubs split — Greencastle split a pair of meets at Western Boone on Monday, winning the girls’ meet and losing in the boys’ event.

Greencastle coach Craig Jordan said it was a “fun” meet for the team since a lot of athletes ran events they wouldn’t normally run.

“Our throwers continued their hot streak and picked up wins in both discus and shot and claimed 12 of the 15 scoring places,” Jordan noted. “Sydney Kallem and Emma Wilson showed off their speed as they collaborated to win the 4x100, take first and third in the 400, and win their respective events (800, 1600, 3200).”

Sydney Lewis took home the win in the 100 meters.

“That was exciting,” Jordan said. “Clayton Wilson and Ben Gellman remained consistent and picked up valuable points, as Clayton took first in both the 1600 and 3200 and second in the 800 and Ben was second in the 1600 and third in the 800.”

Jordan noted that Keeghan McLain won the high jump in a season best.

“Just about all of our sprinters contested the 800 and 1600 and looked great while doing it,” Jordan said. “Seelye Stoffregen picked up third in the 800 while Jack Hutcheson picked up third in the 1600.”

Eagles second, third — South Putnam competed in triangular meets with Clay City and Shakamak on Tuesday.

Clay City won both meets, with the Eagles second in the boys’ meet and third in the girls’ competition.

In the girls’ meet, the Eagles got three wins from Aubrey Barker in the 200, long jump and the 100, while Caitlin Capps won both of the throwing events and Ally Nichols captured the 1600 and the 800.

“We were yet again shorthanded for this meet; some of the girls are limited for injury prevention, some were at the Academic Team competition,” Eagles’ coach Brandon Welti said. “Although our team was really small in numbers, the girls still came away with wins in 8 of the 16 events. However, the lack of depth kept us from picking up additional points needed to compensate for having no relays, and we ended up finishing in third overall.”

Welti was not disappointed with the effort of his athletes, noting Barker had a dominant performance.

“She is without a doubt a gifted athlete, and there is no way of knowing what she is capable of doing,” he said. “I believe there is even more in the tank still, so she’ll be one to watch by the end of the season.”

Welti was also pleased with Capps, who continues to improve on her distances.

“The really impressive thing for her is how she improved her discus PR by more than seven feet and broke the 100-foot barrier for the first time in her career,” he said. “Hopefully there is more of that to come, and now she really has her eyes on advancement once we get to the state tournament.”

Welti noted that Chelsie Edwards continued to be “a force” in the 400, despite dealing with a nagging leg injury and a stomach bug.

“Despite this, she still came out and crushed the 400 and won by three seconds,” he said.

Welti noted that Nichols stepped out of her mid-distance comfort zone to run with some strong runners in the 1600, for the only second time ever in that event.

“It was a three-person race up until the final 200 meters, where Ally then used her mid-distance speed to pull way and get the win,” he said. “It was a really fun race to watch. About an hour later she came out and dominated the 800 as well, leading from start to finish.

“Overall, it was a solid night with many personal bests.”

South Putnam boys’ coach Nathan Aker is also pleased with the progress his team is making.

“Our athletes and coaches are doing an outstanding job in their preparation,” he said. “Despite our guys winning all three relay events, Clay City’s depth got us at the end of the night.”

Kieffer Vittetow took first in the mile and the 800, In a controversial finish, while Jonah Sanders edged out the competition in the 300 hurdles recording his personal record (despite a timing and scoring error).

In the throwing events, Kole Bemish picked up a personal record in the shot put and Darnell Bennett and Colin Adams set personal bests in shot put and discus.

South Putnam 9, Greencastle 1 — The Eagles scored five runs in the fifth inning to break open a close game and record a Western Indiana Conference win over the Tiger Cubs.

“The girls played well again,” South Putnam coach Jamie Steffy said. “After beating a good Monrovia team, we played well against a tough county team at their place. We have a young team that just continues to improve and get better every day.”

Grace Carr had a three-run homer in the crucial fifth inning to pace the Eagles, while Drew Bratcher had a single and two RBI, Helen Eaglin had a triple, single, an RBI and four runs scored while Jaylen Hughbanks had two singles and two RBI.

Skyler Hensley had a single and an RBI for Greencastle.

Carr was also the winning pitcher, allowing three hits and striking out three while walking one.

Kiley Shedron had four singles and two RBI to lead the Clovers at the plate, while Kelsey Helterbrand added two doubles and three RBI, Skylar Price had two singles, a double and two RBI and Tori Combs had a single, double, home run and three RBI.

“We played very well defensively, made very few mental mistakes and had 29 hits in two games, but could not keep Edgewood from scoring runs,” Clover coach Jim Spencer said. “We have to keep working on ways to win each game regardless of low or high-scoring games.”

Greencastle 163, Southmont 186 — Jake Bennett led the Tiger Cubs with a two-over 37 in the win against Southmont.

“He played the first seven holes in one under and the last two holes in three over,” Greencastle coach Steve Paquin said. “Jake has not played his finishing holes as consistently as his first seven. This will improve as the season progresses.”

The other scores were pretty consistent, Paquin said, with Blaise Hasty and Brett Sosebee getting scores of 41.

“This was Brett’s best score to date and we look for him to continue the good scoring,” Paquin said. “Our other varsity players’ scores were all lower than two of Southmont’s scores.

“I look for these scores to get lower as they gain more experience,” he said. “Our team scores will also get better as the weather improves and the course conditions improve.”
