Big Woodwind Bash

Woodwinds join forces for an evening of fun music for all. Included are performances by ensembles of clarinets, saxophones, and flutes. We even feature an ensemble that includes oboe, bassoon and horn. What could be better? Music from Ireland, Venezuela, Greece, America, France and Hungary. That's what!

The DePauw Jazz ensemble welcomes composer-arranger SSG Paul White to the Kresge Stage on Wednesday. Also making an appearance will be the Greencastle Middle School Jazz Band. The focus of the evening's repertoire will be works arranged by White and will include his saxophone playing. The program covers a wide range of moods from an adaptation of a Franz Schubert composition to a pop-influenced mood piece.

The piano students of Prof. May Phang present "Noite no Brazil" at M2 on Thursday. In addition to popular Brazilian dances like the tango and polka, the program will include Heitor Villa-Lobos' most notable large-scale piano composition "Ciclo Brasileiro," evocative of plantation songs and native dance, as well as the second series of Almeida Prado's eclectic "Cartas Celestes," a prodigious multi-volume work conveying the mystery of the universe through "transfigured tonal presence and grandiose resonance." A post-concert reception will feature Brazilian delicacies.

Jazz at the Duck: Paul White Quartet

The four-day residency of saxophonist and composer SFC Paul White continues at Jazz at the Duck with an evening of jazz quartet music. Kenny Phelps (drums), Joel Tucker (guitar) and Steve Snyder (organ) accompany White into the night.

For its final concert of the season, the DePauw University Band is proud to present two distinguished soloists -- Master Sgt. Michael Mergen (United States Marine Corps, "The President's Own") and Paul Mergen, tuba (formerly, United States Marine Corps, "The President's Own") -- in the premiere of their commissioned work for trumpet, tuba, and wind ensemble: Hanging by a Thread by James Stephenson. The program will also include a tribute to Donald H. White, former DePauw School of Music faculty member, featuring his "Miniature Set for Band"; "United Artists" by Kenneth Fuchs; "O Magnum Mysterium" by Morten Lauridsen; "Dance of the New World" by Dana Wilson; the first movement of Igor Stravinsky's classic Octet for chamber winds; and the Finale to Symphony No. 3 "Organ Symphony" by Camille Saint-Sa'ns. Audience members are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item that will be donated directly to the Putnam County Emergency Food Pantry. Bring an item and receive a free ticket to the performance!
