Neese, Rossok pitch baseball to 4-3 victory

ROACHDALE -- Cloverdale and North Putnam met for baseball and softball games on Friday evening.

The Clovers won the softball matchup by a 17-3 margin, and also won the baseball with a 4-3 triumph over the Cougars.

In softball, the Clovers got two runs in the top of the first and then broke things open with 10 in the top of the second.

Cloverdale added one more in the third and four more in the fourth, while North Putnam got its three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Lauren Meek was the winning pitcher, improving her season record to 6-2. She struck out seven batters and allowed just four hits.

Tori Combs hit a home run for the Clovers, while Baylee Hamilton added two singles and a double and Makenzie Allen had two singles.

Cloverdale improved to 10-3 on the season and plays today at Cascade.

Dana Tennis had a double, a run and an RBI for the Cougars while Olivia Haste had a double and an RBI, Mia Runnells had a single and an RBI and Bailey Orsburn also had a single.

The Cougars were victimized by eight errors.

In baseball, the Clovers managed just two hits off Cougar pitchers Jack Kendall, Kaine Benge and Austin Rader but turned that limited production into four runs.

North Putnam got on the board first in the bottom with a run in the bottom of the first against Cloverdale starting pitcher Cooper Neese, while the Clovers tied the score with a run in the top of the fourth. The Cougars placed two in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead, but the Clovers pushed across three in the top of the seventh without the benefit of a hit to claim the victory.

Joe Martin started the rally with a walk, and pinch-runner Zach Nees scored after stealing second and advancing on a pair of wild pitches.

Noah Winnings drew a two-out walk later in the inning, and Neese and pinch-hitter Aaron Fulkerson both walked to load the bases.

Haiden Davis drew a walk to force in the tying run, and Rossok then walked to bring the lead run home.

"Our kids were fired up for this game," Cloverdale coach Tony Meyer said. "Jack Kendall did a great job for them in the first six innings. Our kids stayed patient against their relievers in the seventh and didn't swing at bad pitches. It was a great win for us."

Winnings and Nick Winders each had a single for the Clovers, while North Putnam's hits came from Evan Davies, Kolten Thorson and Max Haste.

Neese pitched the first two innings, allowing one unearned run, striking out one and walking four. Jarron Rossok pitched the final five innings to pick up the win.

Golf

* Tiger Cubs ninth at THS -- Greencastle coach Steve Paquin noted that teams in Saturday's Bob Arnett Invitational, hosted by Terre Haute South at Rea Park in Terre Haute, played in the "perfect storm" for tough weather and course conditions with cold temperatures, wind and fast and hard greens.

"The conditions were very difficult as only three players broke 80," Paquin noted. "The inexperienced Tiger Cubs fought hard, but the conditions took their toll."

Jake Bennett was the low scorer for Greencastle with an 84, while the other Cubs were all in the 90s.

"We can build on this tournament in that we will not face weather and fast hard greens in the future," he said. "Concentration, chipping and putting need to improve to make this team a solid contender later in the season. We need to learn from this and move onto better scores."

Team scores -- 1. Brownsburg 322, 2. Indianapolis North Central (A) 332, 3. Bloomington North 332, 4. Bishop Chatard 332, 5. Terre Haute South 335, 6. Speedway 338, 7. Terre Haute North 342, 8. Northview 355, 9. Greencastle 357, 10. West Vigo 370, 11. Indianapolis North Central (B) 371, 12. Vincennes Rivet 383, 13. Terre Haute South (B) 389, 14. Terre Haute North (B) 416, 15. Sullivan 429.

Greencastle scores -- Jake Bennett 84, Jaxon Parmley 90, Blaise Hasty 91, Conner Taylor 92, Kyle Tesmer 98.

Next match -- The Tiger Cubs will host Terre Haute South today at Windy Hill CC at 4:45 p.m.

* Cougars play first tourney -- The young North Putnam golf team got its first taste of tournament play as they entered the Southmont Invitational on Saturday.

On a cold, cloudy, windy day, the four players from NP found that golf has its rigors as they played their first 18-hole match.

"They experienced the weariness from walking the full 18 holes," Cougar coach Earl Hall said. "Adding to the weather and the exertion was the fact that only one current member of this golf team had ever play the tough track at Crawfordsville Country Club, so each hole was new and an adventure."

Hall noted that it took the young Cougars nine holes to get over their anxiousness and apprehension.

"Once they did, their scores all turned to the better," he said. "All four players had better scores for the second nine as they settled into concentrating and playing and letting what was to happen, happen."

Marcus Burdine led the Cougars with a 118, while Peyton Myers added a 125, R.J. Batchelor had a 134 and Zane Mason had a 140.

"The team finished last in the scoring but they finished and they were encouraged with their first foray into an 18-hole match," Hall said. "All the players felt that this invitational will be a great experience and help them prepare for later dates when they will play other 18 hole outings."

The Cougars will play Cloverdale today.

Track and field

* Greencastle splits in triangular meets -- Greencastle hosted Northview and West Vigo on Thursday for its only home meet of the season, winning the girls' competition and placing third in the boys' meet.

"Our performance as a team was great," Tiger Cubs' coach Craig Jordan said. "There was a lot of excitement with it being our Senior Night and only home meet of the season. Everyone had a fun time competing and several reached new personal or season bests."

Weather threatened the evening, but the storms eventually cleared.

"We were fortunate that the weather did not keep us stalled for too long," Jordan said.
