City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department recently responded to seven dispatches and one medical run.

• At 5:51 p.m. on Thursday, GFD responded to reports of a possible gas leak at 410 E. Washington St. GFD monitored the air, finding a small leak in the furnace area. GFD shut off the gas to the residence and advised maintenance crews of its findings before returning to station at 6:12 p.m.

• At 6:11 p.m. on Thursday, GFD responded to a fire alarm due to unknown reasons at 208 E. Olive St. GFD reset the system before subsequenly returning to station at 6:23 p.m.

• At 9:36 p.m. on Thursday, GFD responded to reports of a possible gas leak at 727 E. Washington St. GFD monitored the air, finding a leak in a gas valve. GFD shut off gas to the residence and advised the occupants of its findings before returning to station at 9:55 p.m.

• At 3:09 p.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 620 Primrose Ln. (Greencastle Christian Church). GFD determined that water had leaked into the dry detector system, causing the alarm to activate unnecessarily. GFD contacted maintenance crews for the church and advised them of the situation before returning to station at 3:51 p.m.

• At 12:52 p.m. on Sunday, GFD responded to reports of an oil spill at the intersection of county roads 200 North and 200 East. Upon arrival, GFD was met by two civilians who informed GFD of an area where approximately seven quarts of oil had been spilled. The oil had already soaked into the ground, prompting GFD to contact the Putnam County Highway Department to come and remove the spill (to dig up). GFD subsequently returned to station at 1:22 p.m.

• At 1:12 p.m. on Sunday, GFD responded to reports of a vehicle ablaze at 3169 S. County Road 200 West. The vehicle’s engine compartment had caught fire for an undetermined reason and was contained to the compartment, officially seemed “controlled” at 1:22 p.m. After extinguishment, GFD returned to station at 2:17 p.m.

• At 3:35 p.m. on Sunday, GFD responded to a fire alarm due to cooking at 111 S. Spring St. GFD reset the alarm before subsequently returning to station at 3:45 p.m.
