Area 30 students take top ten, top three in recent contests

Area 30 students performed well in two recent state competitions.

Of 23 students who competed in the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) competition in Indianapolis, five returned with a place in the top 10 of their category: Cassie Szalay (medical reading, Cloverdale High School), Anna Carrington (pathophysiology, South Putnam High School), Mia Stevens (transcultural healthcare, Greencastle High School), Luke-Alan Jobes (Eminence High School, top 10 in prepared speaking last year) and Alexis Valdes-Kelsey (North Putnam High School, both EMT).

Last year Area 30 sent 20 CNA and EMT students to the competition, where they took first in medical reading, third in extemporaneous health poster and the top 10 in various other contests.

Meanwhile, five students and three teams from Area 30 placed in the top three in several categories of the Skills USA state competition last weekend. Repeating the success of last year’s team, the computer systems networking quiz bowl team, consisting of Robbie Froderman, Wyatt Lewis (both of GHS), Jeffrey Jurgens, James Crocker (both of CHS) and Chris Huff (NPHS) took first.

Second places were taken by Logan Jones (SPHS) in marine service auto services technology, Gabriella Selvia (GHS) in architectural drafting and the chapter display early childhood education team, consisting of Jade Chambers (EHS) and Olivia Boler (SPHS).

Third place was taken by Eric Hale (NPHS) in auto collision repair, Ben Schultz (NPHS) in auto refinishing, Ryan Cole (SPHS) in prepared speech and the digital cinema production team, consisting of Jenna Mills (GHS) and Laura Ratliff (CHS).

In addition to quiz bowl, Area 30 took first in mobile robotics, second in technology computer applications and third in information technology repair, motorcycle repair, criminal justice and 3D animation last year.
