ROCKVILLE – North Putnam swept a pair of three-way track meets on Tuesday, winning the girls’ meet by 38 points over Rockville and taking the boys’ meet by 50 points over second-place Riverton Parke.

In the girls’ meet, Hannah Sims won both hurdles events to lead a balanced attack.

“We ended our dual/tri meet portion of the season on a positive note,” Cougar girls’ coach Kevin Lutes said. “We had at least six more PRs set, which is a great thing to happen toward the latter part of April. We’re looking forward to these next few meets where we’ll meet even more competition.

“Though we have to be more selective from this point forward (only two per event), all our Cougar ladies have made this our most successful season in a very long time.”

For the boys, Chris Murray won the 100 and the long jump and the Cougars won all three relay races.

• Greencastle 165, Tri-West 174 – Greencastle got a 37 from medalist Blaise Hasty in defeating Tri-West by nine strokes.

Jake Bennett added a 40 for the Tiger Cubs, while Jaxon Parmley and Conner Taylor each shot a 44, Brett Sosebee shot a 46, Kyle Tesmer shot a 50, Josh Bomgardner shot a 54, John Brook had a 59 and Henry Carter added a 64.

“The Cubs played the front nine at Quail Creek, of which none of the players had played it before,” Greencastle coach Steve Paquin said. “We also played ‘summer rules’, which means they couldn’t improve the lie, for the first time this season. This makes the round much more difficult than improving the lie on each shot.”

Paquin noted that Hasty had an ‘outstanding’ round with eight pars and one bogey. Bennett hit the ball well, Paquin noted.

“He had too many three putts,” he said. “Jaxon and Conner also played well, but also had trouble on the greens.”

Paquin noted that his team is playing well, but still needs to clean up a few bad shots.

“Putting and chipping continue to plague the Cubs and must improve before conference and sectional,” he said. “Ball striking was one of the better aspects of this round.”

• Cougars finish third – At Deer Creek, North Putnam competed against Cascade and Owen Valley on Tuesday and finished third.

Cascade won with a 176, while Owen Valley had a 210 and North Putnam a 276.

Coach Earl Hall noted the Cougars played Deer Creek for the second time this season.

“We realized that the rough is no place to be,” he said. “There were very few fairways hit from the tee, which left shots dying in the thick rough and long, second shots to be played to the greens. The young Cougars struggled once in the rough to advance the ball very far up the fairway and as such, they saw mounting scores and a bit of frustration.”

Putting was also a problem for the Cougars on Tuesday, Hall said, but some players improved their scores from the earlier round at Deer Creek – Peyton Myers (63) and Zane Mason (72). Marcus Burdine added a 70 and R.J. Batchelor added a 71.

The Cougars are idle until Wednesday, when they will play with Greencastle at Crawfordsville.

• Hicks medalist for Eagles – South Putnam’s Tyler Hicks was one of three medalists with a 42 as the Eagles competed in a three-way meet with Indian Creek and Owen Valley.

Indian Creek won the team title with a 180, edging Owen Valley’s 182. South Putnam was third with 211.

Justin Pitts added a 53 for South Putnam, while Ryan Neumann added a 54 and Jared Seidler shot a 62.

• West Vigo 10, South Putnam 0 – The Eagles were no-hit by future Division I pitcher Ty Lautenschlager (Louisiana-Monroe) and lost for the second straight night.

“We had two really tough games in a row against two very strong opponents,” said South Putnam coach Brady Rhodes, whose team lost 14-2 to South Vermillion on Monday. “I have to tip my hat to both South Vermillion and West Vigo. They have really excellent programs are solid top to bottom.”

Rhodes noted some injuries have affected his lineup, like many teams at this point of the season.

“We have had to play several guys out of position and shuffle our pitching rotation,” he said. “These are the types of challenges all teams face throughout a season.”

Rhodes is confident his team will rebound from this two-game segment of the season.

“What I really want to see from the team is a good response to this adversity,” he said. “I earnestly believe we will bounce back from this, get everyone healthy, and continue to perform the way I know we are capable of performing. It’s a long season, and we are doing what we need to do now to set ourselves up to compete for sectionals.”

• Sullivan 15, Greencastle 6 – At Sullivan, Abe Wade had two hits for the Tiger Cubs in the conference defeat.

“We really played a pretty good game,” Greencastle coach Ben Wells said. “Defensively we made a lot of plays for our pitchers, but still had several moments where we lost our focus and made some silly mistakes. Sullivan is a really good hitting team and we did the best we could to keep them off balance.”

Wells thought his team did a much better job of putting the ball in play and working the count.

“It is probably the most patient we have been this year at the plate,” he said. “We are still striking out more than I would like, but Sullivan has some lively arms and I was happy with how the guys battled tonight in the box.

“The coaching staff saw a lot of positive things tonight, and this is a game that we can use to hopefully gain some momentum moving forward.”
