Letter to the Editor

Veteran salutes Street Department crew

Thursday, April 27, 2017

To the Editor:

This letter is directed to Mr. Brad Phillips and the men and women of the Greencastle Street Department. As a 20-year veteran of the United States Air Force and a citizen of Greencastle, I write this letter in recognition of these folks for the work they do for our city and the community in maintaining our streets and city property.

The biggest part of their jobs may seem unimportant to them. The work they do for us on Veterans Memorial Highway in the Veterans Tree Area to me, my family and other veterans is for very important. We, the citizens of Greencastle, are lucky to have such a memorial to our veterans.

Watching the Street Department putting out mulch around the trees, clipping the trees and placing flags at important holidays is a part of this process, keeping things looking nice.

I urge people, as you’re driving by seeing them, to “toot the horn and give them a big wave.”

It doesn’t cost a thing, and you will be putting a smile on someone’s face.

So to the men and women of the Street Department, this veteran salutes you for what you do for us and our community.

James J. O’Brien
