HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Bennett’s 36 leads Tiger Cubs over Clovers

Friday, April 28, 2017

CLOVERDALE — Jake Bennett shot a 36 to pace Greencastle to a 156-182 win over Cloverdale on Thursday in boys’ high school golf action at Clover Meadows.

Blaise Hasty added a 37, Jaxon Parmley had a 38, Kyle Tesmer had a 45, Conner Taylor had a 47 and Brett Sosebee had a 53.

“The Tiger Cubs played excellent golf on Thursday,” Greencastle coach Steve Paquin said. “The three veteran players for Greencastle had scores of even par 36 [Jake], 1 over 37 [Blaise] and 2 over 38 [Jaxon].”

Paquin noted that freshman Kyle Tesmer had his season-best score, and the team’s 156 was the lowest round of the season.

“Chipping and putting was much better and the scores reflected the improvement,” he said. “Each player showed improvement in course management and consistency in ball striking.”

Cloverdale was paced by Zach Nichols with a 40, while Zarek Wellington added a 44, Drew Boyette had a 47, Jason Miller had a 51, Tyler Harrison shot a 52 and Wyatt Helterbrand added a 60.

“With the temperature drop and wind, I expected that scores would be adversely affected, but that wasn’t the case,” Cloverdale coach Doug Wokoun said. “Many players from both teams did a lot of good things.  Zach had his best round so far, and really provided a spark, while Zarek had two bad holes, but otherwise played very well.

“They are both approaching the levels we need from them for us to be successful.”

Wokoun noted that Boyette had an “uncharacteristic” off night, but finished well after a rough start.

“Tyler and Jason both played pretty well everywhere except the greens,” he said. “Both of them were about eight strokes higher than normal on the greens.  If we can get that fixed, we will be in very good shape.

“Wyatt has been struggling, but he made some strong strides to better golf, and is just beginning to scratch the surface of the golfer he can become.”

Both teams are scheduled to be in tourney play today, with Cloverdale traveling to West Chase to play in the Brownsburg Invitational and Greencastle hosting Northview, Southmont, Rockville and South Vermillion for the Tiger Cub Invitational at Windy Hill.
