Tiger Cub girls, Eagle boys win county track and field crowns
Stoffregen has perfect 4-4 evening
Greencastle’s girls ran away with the team title on Tuesday evening in the Putnam County track and field meet held at South Putnam, while the hosts captured the boys’ title in a much more closely contested event.
The Tiger Cubs racked up 120 team points in the girls’ competition, paced by two individual firsts (both hurdles events) and two winning relay spots (4x100 and 4x400) from sophomore Seelye Stoffregen.
Greencastle also got three individual firsts from sophomore Emma Wilson in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 races and three firsts from freshman Keridan Hollis, who won the 100 and 200 dashes and was also on the 4x100 relay team.
Wilson was a 2016 state finalist in the 1,600 and 3,200.
Aubrey Barker of South Putnam was a double winner in the long jump and high jump and just missed a third by placing second in the 100.
Other individual winners were Greencastle’s Jada Amis in the shot put, Nailah Ray in the discus and Sydney Lewis in the pole vault.
South Putnam’s Chelsie Edwards also picked up a first in the 400 and was also a member of the winning 4x800 relay team. Others on the relay squad were Alex Fanning, Ally Nichols and Lexi Vanihel.
Hollis and Stoffregen were joined on the winning 4x100 relay team by Bailey Shuee and Erin Thomas and on the 4x400 team by Shuee and Allison Stevens.
South Putnam was second with 55 points.
In the boys’ competition, individual double winners were South Putnam’s Kieffer Vittetow in the 1,600 and 3,200 and Cloverdale’s Tyler Kaeff (also a 2016 state finalist) in both hurdles events.
Other individual winners were Greencastle’s Seth Nichols in the 100, Elijah Williams in the shot put, Spencer Rhine in the discus and 2016 state finalist J.T. Matthews in the high jump, Cloverdale’s Ryan Heavener in the 400 and Blake Willis in the pole vault, South Putnam’s Austin Rumley in the 800 and North Putnam’s Ethan Christy in the 200 and Brandon Barker in the long jump.
South Putnam won the 4x800 relay to open the running competitions and the 4x400 relay to close out the victory. The Eagles had 70 team points to edge runnerup Cloverdale by 13. North Putnam was one point behind Cloverdale with 56 and Greencastle was a close fourth with 55.
Rumley was a double winner with his 800 title and his spot on the 4x400 relay.
Christy was also a double winner as a member of North Putnam’s winning 4x100 relay team in addition to the victory in the 200.
