Suspect arrested in Cloverdale Casey's armed robbery
CLOVERDALE -- A Cloverdale man was arrested Monday afternoon for the April 6 robbery of Casey's General Store in Cloverdale.
A joint investigation involving Cloverdale Police Department, Putnam County Sheriff's Department and the Indiana State Police resulted in the arrest of 32-year-old David L. Burchett.
An early break in the case came when Burchett was arrested on an unrelated charge just hours after the robbery.
At 8:50 a.m. on April 6, Putnam County 911 Dispatch received a domestic battery call from an apartment on South Lafayette Street in Cloverdale. Officers responded and noticed the domestic battery suspect appeared to match the description of the earlier armed robbery suspect.
Burchett was arrested for domestic battery. Even as the suspect posted bond in that Putnam Superior Court case, officers continued their armed robbery investigation.
Over the next few days, surveillance footage was reviewed, search warrants on the apartment and Burchett's vehicle were executed, and several interviews were conducted, all leading to an arrest warrant being issued on Monday.
Cloverdale Police Officer Luke Brown spotted David Burchett around 4:20 p.m. Monday, operating his vehicle westbound from Cloverdale on State Road 42. A traffic stop was initiated and Burchett was taken into custody without incident by Cloverdale Brown, Marshal Steve Hibler and ISP Master Trooper DuJuan Presley-McFadden.
Burchett was transported to the Putnam County Jail and booked in at 5:04 p.m. and booked in on charges of armed robbery, pointing a firearm and intimidation.
Also taking part in the month-long investigation were ISP Putnamville detectives Sgt. Sam Stearley and Troy Cobb, Putnam County Sheriff's Office and the office of Putnam County Prosecutor Tim Bookwalter.
On Thursday, April 6 at 12:19 a.m., Putnam County 911 received a call from the Casey's gas station at 355 N. Main St. in Cloverdale, reporting an armed robbery.
The suspect was described as a white male 5-8 to 6-feet tall, wearing a black bandana over his face, black baseball cap and dark clothing. The suspect brandished a black revolver and demanded money and cigarettes, of which he received approximately $300 and 14 cartons of cigarettes.
The suspect then fled north from the store.
