DPU Prindle Institute to host July 10-14 'Express Camp' for Putnam students

Tuesday, May 9, 2017

The Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics at DePauw University is offering a week-long summer camp July 10-14 for rising first- through fifth-grade Putnam County students.

"Express Camp" will expose campers to philosophy ideas and principles through the stories and themes of well-known children's books.

Led by local Putnam K-5 educators and college-aged counselors, campers will experience fun, interactive activities that will help them learn how to express their values, and how to actively and empathetically listen to others who have differing views.

Andrew Cullison, director of the Prindle Institute for Ethics, said the goal is to get campers talking respectfully about their opinions on a range of issues.

"If they can learn to be composed in, say, a discussion over whether vanilla or chocolate ice cream is better, they may be able to translate that skill when they later face disagreement on a weightier topics, like politics or religion," Cullison explains.

The camp will run Monday through Friday, starting at 8 a.m. and conclude at 3 p.m.

Breakfast, lunch and snack will be served each day and bus transportation within Greencastle city limits is available.

Campers will spend a significant part of the day outdoors exploring the DePauw Nature Park and experience different interest groups focusing on art and technology.

North Putnam fourth-grade teacher Staci Parent witnessed Philosophy for Kids firsthand during Winter Term this year when a DePauw class worked with her students.

"I was amazed how these children's books sparked such insightful and reflective conversations amongst my students," Parent said. "The students were able to explore new and ethical perspectives in these familiar stories. I am excited we are able to offer this exciting camp opportunity to all grade 1-5 students in Putnam County."

Greencastle Community School Corporation Superintendent Jeff Hubble is also impressed with the project.

"I am thankful to hear about this camp option for county students," Hubble said. "It will be a great opportunity for students to engage in meaningful conversations, while having fun at DePauw's Nature Park."

Express Camp Director Tonya Welker called the venture "an exciting opportunity for children in the county to get together, collaborate and learn from each other all while having fun."

"We are looking forward to hosting this exciting camp."
