Boller records first UMP Modified feature win at LPS

PUTNAMVILLE – Illinois native Shane Cockrum battled the competition through a caution with one lap remaining in the sprint car feature at Lincoln Park Speedway to claim the win at the Putnamville oval on Saturday.
Josh Boller pulled away over the final five laps to pick up his first career modified victory. Steve Peeden won his third UMP Super Stock feature at LPS this season, Scott Crouch was the bomber feature winner and Rod Henning on the Midwest Mini Sprint Association feature.
Thirty-four UMP Modifieds were in the pits at Lincoln Park Speedway on Saturday night. A stout field presented a challenge for Greencastle’s Boller, who had made several modified starts in the past. Boller opened the night with a heat race win along with Tim Prince, Richie Lex and James Walters.
Walters and Prince started on the front row of the A-main with Boller and Lex behind them.
Once the field went green it was Prince and Boller door-to-door for the first five laps before Boller darted to the lead on lap nine coming out of turn two. Once he had the lead outright, Boller set the pace for the final half of the 20-lap feature.
The top-three of Boller, Prince and Lex built a solid lead over the rest of the field as Walters and Travis Shoulders fought for the fourth spot midway through the main event. Kenny Carmichael held a small advantage over Brook Cooper and Roy Bruce.
As the laps ticked off, Boller began to pull away to a comfortable margin. However, a caution with three laps remaining brought the remainder of the field back to his bumper.
When the green flag came back out, Boller got a strong start and made it stick for the victory followed by Lex, Prince, Carmichael Sr. and Shoulders in the top-five.
In the sprint car A-main Brent Beauchamp and Shane Cockrum started on the front row ahead of AJ Hopkins and Max McGhee.
Hopkins and Beauchamp set the early pace as Cockrum and McGhee followed ahead of Casey Shuman. However, it was a slick dive by Hopkins that brought him to the lead five laps into the 25-lap feature. Hopkins set a sizzling pace for the next eight laps as Beauchamp pulled even by lap 10 ahead of McGhee. On lap 13, Hopkins took the low line into turn one and got turned around as his night ended prematurely. Beauchamp had nowhere to go and was collected and forced to the back of the field at the midway point.
Once the field took the green flag again, Cockrum set the pace as McGhee gave chase along with Jeff Bland with Shuman in tow. Beauchamp worked his way back through the field to get back into contention as a caution flew with five laps remaining.
Over the final five laps, Cockrum held down the top spot, but hooked the cushion coming out of turn four with one lap to go. Both McGhee and Bland closed the gap and made a serious challenge during the final circuit, but Cockrum took the checkered flag. Bland, McGhee, Beauchamp and Shuman wrapped up the top-five.
Peeden proved to be dominant in the UMP Super Stock A-main.
Wes McClara and Peeden were the heat race winners on Saturday night and started on the front row.
Starting outside of Wes McClara, Peeden worked to the lead several laps into the race and pulled away to a sizable victory as McClara held off the hard charging Larry Raines and Cullen Goodman. Doug McCullough claimed the fifth spot.
In the bomber feature, Scott Crouch started on the front row and made his starting position stick as he came home with the victory.
The Danville native held off Jordan Almanza throughout the duration of the race as Megan Cavaness held down the third spot. CJ Bryan raced forward from 14th to place fourth ahead Cody Wright.
Rod Henning came home with the victory in the Midwest Mini Sprint Association feature.
