Baylee Hamilton had a single and a double for the 19-4 Clovers, while Kelsey Helterbrand had a single, double and an RBI and Kiley Shedron had two singles and an RBI.

“Lauren Meek pitched an excellent game,” Clover coach Jim Spencer said. “It was a great collective effort on defense as well as a great job of finding ways to put a few runs on the board. We need to get a couple of good practices in over the next few days and get ready for a very tough opponent in the sectional on Tuesday against Southmont.”

Golf

Martinsville 186, Cloverdale 190 — At the Foxcliff Golf Course, Cloverdale’s Drew Boyette won medalist honors with a 40 as the Clovers were nipped on the course where they will play sectional action next month.

Zach Nichols added a 44, while Zarek Wellington shot a 52, Jason Miller had a 54, Tyler Harrison shot a 60 and Wyatt Helterbrand added a 65.

“We let an opportunity get away in this match,” Clover coach Doug Wokoun said. “Drew and Zach both played well, but we didn’t have anyone follow up after that.

“These were the most treacherous greens we have seen this season, and we did not adjust,” he added. “The layout is tight in some places, but we managed most of that pretty well.”

Wokoun is hopeful his team will get more balanced scoring as the state tourney approaches.

“One of these days we will get four or five guys on the same page, but it is frustrating to all of us to get some good, competitive rounds and not back them up,” he said. “Consistency on the course is something we need to continually emphasize.

Cloverdale (5-7) travels to Rea Park to play West Vigo on Monday.

Cascade 181, North Putnam 245 — The Cougars traveled to Deer Creek to play the Cadets for the second time, and while they were defeated again the difference was much less this time around.

Cascade won the first match 176-276, but on Thursday the Cougars cut that gap to 181-245 with a much better performance.

“In a three-week time frame the young Cougars were able to shave 31 strokes off their previous team total,” Cougar coach Earl Hall said. “This event showed a few valid points — one, that the more opportunities you have to play a course, the more you learn how to manage the course and your game; two, that players will remember their previous rounds and trouble areas and work their way around it; and finally, you feel more at ease with what you are about to face.

“All three of these points were magnified in the results each of the NP golfers produced last evening versus their results three weeks ago.”

The Cougars were led by Marcus Burdine with a 60 (previous round 70), while Zane Mason had a 60 (down from 72), R.J. Batchelor had a 61 (previous round 71) and Peyton Myers added a 64 (previous round 63).

“The scores may not seem outstanding, but as a coach I look for improvement in every practice and every match, both as individuals and as a team,” Hall said. “I have seen improved play, continued enthusiasm, and the results from hard work and the players’ efforts.”

The Cougars face two opponents next week as they will travel next Tuesday to play North Vermillion at Rivercrest Golf Club in Covington. Then on Thursday, the Cougars will host Fountain Central at Twin Bridges golf course.
