Sheriff’s Department

A Greencastle woman was jailed early Saturday morning following a single-vehicle accident south of Bainbridge.

At 12:05 a.m., Putnam County sheriff’s Deputy Robert Soileux was dispatched to a crash with injury at 858 W. CR 350 North.

The property owners, Jay and Debbie Hall, told Soilleux they had answered a knock at their front door and found Jennifer Pena, 29, Greencastle, who smelled of alcohol. She told the Halls she had wrecked her car and was in a lot of pain.

Pena reportedly also said she had been the only person in the vehicle.

However, Pena told a different story to responders, saying she was drunk and had not been driving. She said there had been two white males with dark hair in the car with her and one of them was driving.

Pena further told Solleux that she did not know the names of the men, as she had meet them for the first time that evening at the Bainbridge Tap.

Pena said she could not remember who she had been drinking with at the Tap but when she was ready to leave, she asked the men to drive her home.

Asked why she would allow a stranger to drive her home, Pena said, “That way I don’t get in trouble.”

Pena was taken to Putnam County Hospital and treated for her injuries. At 4:21 a.m. she was booked in the Putnam County Jail on charges of disorderly conduct and public intoxication.

The car, a 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, is registered to Pena. Soilleux reported it was on its side near the intersection of County Road 350 North and County Road 50 North. Based on marks in the gravel, the vehicle was eastbound on 350 North and went straight through the T-intersection with 50 East.

Pena was the only passenger found nearby. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000. The car was towed. Deputies responded to a pair of other recent crashes.

• At 7:40 a.m. on Saturday, Lisa K Sciotto, 53, Rockville, was eastbound on U.S. 36 just east of Big Walnut Creek in a 2017 Subaru Legacy when she hit a deer.

Deputy Jacob Harrington estimated damage at $5,001-$10,000. The vehicle was towed.

• At 2 p.m. on Friday, June Simpson, 80, Rockville, was northbound on U.S. 231 approaching the construction zone just south of Brick Chapel in a 2000 Dodge Caravan. Simpson was unable to get stopped in time for the temporary signal and her vehicle rear-ended a stopped 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by Linda S. Hendrickson, 68, Greencastle.

There was minimal damage to the vehicle but Hendrickson complained of significant pain. She was taken to Putnam County Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Hendrickson’s vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.
