CLAYTON — The high school softball season for Putnam County teams came to end on Tuesday evening as North Putnam and Cloverdale were eliminated in the Class 2A Cascade Sectional.

Greencastle played one of its best games of the year, falling 3-1 to Danville in eight innings in the Indian Creek sectional.

Here is a look at each game:

Southmont 3, Cloverdale 1 — The Mounties got a two-run homer from slugging Sydney Casteel in the first inning and were able to hold on for the victory.

Southmont’s Paige Knowling doubled with one out in the top of the first, and the lefty slugger who has signed with Louisiana Tech proved why she’s a Division I player.

Casteel sent a Lauren Meek pitch far and high over the right-field fence, about 240 feet, to put her team up 2-0 early.

Meek only allowed a fifth-inning run the rest of the way, as leadoff hitter Avery Hess reached on an infield hit, Knowling Walked and Casteel singled to load the bases.

Jordan Crist then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Hess, with Clover center fielder Tori Combs throwing out Knowling at third on the play.

The Clovers got only a first-inning single through the first three innings.

Makenzie Allen led off the fourth with a single and went to second a wild pitch, but the middle of the order was unable to bring her home.

After falling behind 3-0, Cloverdale got its run in the bottom of the fifth inning as Skylar Price and Hannah Long led off the inning with singles and Meek sacrificed them to second and third.

After Dinah Bunch reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases, Baylee Hamilton hit a sacrifice fly to center to plate Price. The Clovers stranded the remaining two runners.

The Clovers went out 1-2-3 in the sixth, and Meek came to bat with two out in the seventh inning hoping to start a rally to extend her career.

The senior lined a shot down the left-field line for a double, but was left stranded at third as the Mounties got the final out of the game.

The Clovers were playing without leadoff hitter and shortstop Kelsey Helterbrand, who was injured in the team’s final regular-season game last week.

Danville 3, Greencastle 1 (eight innings) — At Indian Creek, Greencastle lost to the Warriors 11-3 earlier in the season but took them to extra innings on Tuesday before falling by two runs.

“Since then we’ve been working on reducing fielding errors and increasing quality hits,” Greencastle coach Tabatha Briones said. “We still need to work on a our hitting, but defensively we are stronger.”

Briones credited Ivy Wright and Mckenzie Woodall with good defensive efforts, successfully handling all 16 chances in the field.

Junior pitcher Julia Mundy continued her strong conclusion to the season on Tuesday.

“She has been a key element in the second half of our season,” Briones said. “It helps when others coaches take notice, but Mundy’s confidence in dominating the mound helped with our team improvement. More importantly, we started playing as a team.”

Golf

West Vigo 183, Cloverdale 196 — Zarek Wellington paced the Clovers with a 43, missing medalist honors by one stroke.

Zach Nichols added a 47, while Tyler Harrison had a 50 and Jason Miller shot a 56.

“Zarek had one bad hole, but otherwise played pretty well,” Clover coach Doug Wokoun said. “Zach had a great start, but had some problems on the last three holes. We really need those two to be in tandem, but it doesn’t seem to happen very often. “

Wokoun noted that Drew Boyette is out indefinitely right now, and the team “really missed him” in this match.

“Tyler struggled with consistency, and Jason battled missing fairways all through the round,” Wokoun said. “The greens were lightning quick, and both teams struggled with getting balls to stop from the fairway, as well as navigating the putting.”

West Vigo - Ethan Corenflos 42, Alex Baker 43, Kyle Marshall 48, Branch Joy 50, Nick Kent 51

Cloverdale - Zarek Wellington 43, Zach Nichols 47, Tyler Harrison 50, Jason Miller 56

Owen Valley 166, Cloverdale 194 — Owen Valley’s Kyle Swafford was the medalist with a 40 as the Patriots won on their home course at Rolling Meadows.

Zach Nichols, Tyler Harrison and Zarek Wellington each shot a 46 for the Clovers, while Wyatt Helterbrand added a 56 and Jason Miller had a 61.

“All of our top three had seven competitive holes, but had two that were definitely not competitive,” Clover coach Doug Wokoun said. “Zach and Zarek had rounds that were pretty indicative of most of their seasons, but Tyler stepped up and played much better than he has been.”

Wokoun noted that Helterbrand is “making progress and did some good things.

“He still has some strokes out there to eliminate,” the coach added..

Boyette was again absent from the lineup.

“We don’t know how long he will be out at this point, but he had often been a steadying factor for us,” Wokoun said. “We are missing that influence right now.”

Cloverdale (5-9) hosts Terre Haute South and White River Valley May 31.
