BLOOMINGTON — Emma Wilson of Greencastle won the 1,600 and 3,200 races as expected on Tuesday evening at the Bloomington North girls’ track and field regional, qualifying for the June 3 state finals in both events for the second straight year.

Wilson has had a successful season, but hasn’t been pushed to turn in her best time on many occasions this year.

Facing the best competition so far, Wilson turned on the jets and set a regional record in both events.

In the 1,600, Wilson’s time of 4:55.96 was 2.04 seconds faster than the previous best set by Stephanie Bassett of Bloomington North in 1984.

Wilson won by a margin of nearly 17 seconds over runnerup Grace Williams of Bloomington North.

The state record is 4:43.46, set by Waverly Neer of Culver Academies in 2011.

In the 3,200, Wilson was even more dominant in shattering her own record set last spring. Wilson turned in a time of 10:41.86, more than eight seconds faster than her record effort in 2016.

The state record is 10:22.20, set in 2015 by Anna Rohrer of Mishawaka.

South Putnam's Aubrey Barker earned a trip to the state track finals by winning the long jump at the Bloomington North girls' regional on Tuesday night.

Putnam County got another state finalist when Aubrey Barker leaped nearly a foot longer than her seeded distance to win the long jump.

Barker had the 11th-best distance of 16-2.75 entering the competition, but also rose to the occasion and had a winning leap of 17-2.25.

Wilson’s double victories helped Greencastle to finish eighth in the team standings with 21.33 points.

Other scorers for the Tiger Cubs were sophomore Jada Amis (eighth in the shot put) and sophomore Sydney Lewis (in a three-way tie for eighth in pole vault).

South Putnam got additional scoring from sophomore Chelsie Edwards (seventh in the 400), junior Ally Nichols (seventh in the 800) and from its 4x400 relay team (sixth in 4:18.80).

Members of the 4x400 relay team were senior Lois Cheatham, freshman Lexi Vanihel, Edwards and Nichols.

North Putnam got one point from sophomore Emily Gasho, who placed eighth in the discus. Cloverdale picked up one-third of a point when freshman Kenzie Stoltz tied for eighth in the pole vault.

The girls’ state finals are June 3 at Indiana University.
