North Putnam’s baseball team will take on Southmont at 11 a.m. Monday in the first semifinal game of the Class 2A South Vermillion Sectional.

The Cougars (11-13) drew a first-round bye and are the lone Putnam County team still alive in baseball or softball.

Southmont defeated Cloverdale 11-1 on Wednesday in first-round action to reach the semifinal round.

The 12-11 Mounties were ranked No. 13 in the final Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association poll.

The host Wildcats, who had been one of the pre-tourney favorites after a 20-win regular season, were upset 2-1 by Monrovia in Thursday’s first game.

Defending sectional champion Rockville then defeated South Putnam 12-3 in the second game.

North Putnam and Southmont met on April 4, with the Mounties picking up a 4-0 victory.

The Cougars got only two hits in that game off Mountie junior pitcher Cam Chadd (4-4).

Junior Cole Wemer (3-4) pitched Southmont’s tourney-opening win over Cloverdale.
