In addition to the track and field state finals participants, several other Putnam County athletes remain alive in state tournament competition.

Greencastle, North Putnam and South Putnam will compete today in the Attica Sectional.

9:50 — Attica, Rockville, Greencastle, Seeger (starting at hole 1); Fountain Central, North Montgomery, Southmont, Turkey Run (starting at hole 10)

Greencastle is the defending champion and would be considered as one of the top contenders this year after finishing the season 13-1 in dual, tri and quad matches and winning Putnam County, Western Indiana Conference and Mustang Invitational tournament titles.

Cloverdale will compete on Monday in the Martinsville Sectional.

On Saturday, the Greencastle No. 1 doubles team of Lydia Trout-Nicole Newgent will play Homestead’s Maddy Heiney-Payton Krahn in the IHSAA girls' tennis regional at Kokomo featuring undefeated teams whose teams were eliminated.

The winner of the Greencastle-Homestead match will play the winner of the Lafayette Jeff-Yorktown match to advance to the individual doubles state finals.

Greencastle 5, South Putnam 1 — The Tiger Cubs hooked up in an 18-hole, match play event at Windy Hill on Tuesday.

Tyler Hicks

Tyler Hicks of South Putnam recorded his team’s lone victory of the day by defeating Greencastle’s Jake Bennett 1-up at No. 1.

Other scores were Brett Sosebee (G) over Ryan Neumann (SP) 1-up, Conner Taylor (G) over Jared Seidler (SP) 6 and 3, Kyle Tesmer (G) over Levi Girton (SP) 8 and 3, Blaise Hasty (G) over Justin Pitts (SP) 11 and 3 and Jaxon Parmley (G) over Thomas Fanning (SP) 14 and 3.

Match play is played by each hole, and whoever wins the hole is 1-up. Play continues with hole by hole until one player is up more than there are holes left.

“The match of the day was played by Tyler Hicks and Jake Bennett and ended on the 18th hole with Tyler beating Jake 1-up,” Greencastle coach Steve Paquin noted. “There was lots of drama and good golf played by both players.”
