County Jail

Four people were recently booked into the Putnam County Jail.

Wednesday

• At 3:03 p.m., Eric Robert Brenner, 29, of Rosedale, was lodged at the jail on a local criminal warrant.

• At 5:30 p.m., Willie Hugh Spears III, 24, of Cloverdale, was booked into the jail on charges of battery.

• At 8:47 p.m., Chase Allen Duff, 20, of Cloverdale, was lodged at the jail on a local warrant.

• At 11:51 p.m., John Stephen Brown, 64, of Greencastle, was booked into the jail on charges of neglect of a dependent.

City Police

A 24-year-old Greencastle man will be summoned into court to answer a charge of possession of marijuana, City Police reported.

• At 8:02 p.m. Sunday, Michael Spivey was stopped at Indiana and Liberty streets by Officer Zach Rhine.

Five recent traffic citations were issued by city officers.

• At 11:58 p.m. Wednesday, Brent Wallace, 32, Greencastle, was issued a summons by Officer Elsiana Crosby.

Stopped on Bloomington Street, Wallace was cited for driving with a suspended license with a prior offense.

• At 9:30 p.m. Monday, Morgan Grundlock, 21, Coatesville, was ticketed by Capt. Charles Inman.

Pulled over on Veterans Memorial Highway, Grundlock was cited for having no license plate.

• At 9:27 a.m. Monday, Daniel Hayes, 60, Greencastle, was cited by Officer Nick Eastham.

Stopped on Indianapolis Road, Hayes was ticketed for disregarding a traffic signal.

• At 10:30 p.m. May 22, Haley Wert, 19, Bainbridge, received a pair of citations from Reserve Officer Billy Wallace.

Wert was ticketed for disregarding a stopsign and for having an expired learner’s permit.

Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies responded to one recent property-damage accident.

• At 3:35 p.m. on Saturday, Levi F. Yowell, 37, Avon, was eastbound on County Road 500 North in a 2007 Dodge Ram.

Yowell told Reserve Deputy Ken Rozelle he was unfamiliar with the road. As he approached a downhill curve in front of the Heritage Lake Campground, Yowell said he met a vehicle heading the opposite direction on a narrow bridge.

Yowell applied his brakes, leaving 100 feet of skid marks on the pavement then continuing another 70 feet off the roadway, coming to a stop in a wooded area short of entering a creek.

Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

• At 6:06 p.m. on Wednesday, Chandler R. Hyten, 20, of Fillmore, was eastbound on County Road 100 North in a 2012 Ford Fusion when he swerved to miss a deer and hit a tree. Although the airbags deployed, Hyten was uninjured.

Sgt. Kyle Gibbons estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000, and the vehicle was towed by Jerry’s Wrecker Service.

• At 6:46 a.m. on Thursday, Matthew R. Davidson, 25, of Greencastle, was southbound on U.S. 231 in a 2001 Dodge Dakota when a black SUV in front of him stopped abruptly for a trash truck.

Davidson swerved off the road and into a mailbox at 1304 N. U.S. 231, belonging to Susan Crodian. The other driver did not stop.

Deputy Scott Ducker, assisted by Capt. Tom Helmer and Deputy J. Boller, estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000. There were no injuries.

The vehicle was towed.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department recently responded to five dispatches and one medical assist.

• At 1:15 a.m. on Monday, GFD responded to reports of a motor-vehicle accident without injury at 1157 Indianapolis Rd. GFD assisted in the removal of fluids and debris from the roadway before returning to station at 1:48 a.m.

• At 11:12 a.m. on Tuesday, GFD responded to reports of a vehicle fire in the parking lot of Walmart (1750 Indianapolis Rd.). No fire was present upon arrival. However, what is believed to have been a brake fire extinguished by the vehicle’s owner, who was advised not to drive the vehicle away from the scene until the brakes had ample time to cool. GFD subsequently returned to station at 11:19 a.m.

• At 9:49 p.m. on Wednesday, GFD responded to a fire alarm due to cooking at 330 Greenwood Ave. GFD reset the alarm and returned to station at 10:08 p.m.

• At 11:16 a.m. on Thursday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 412 S. Indiana St. The alarm was determined to have been activated unnecessarily by excessive dust created from nearby construction. GFD reset the alarm and returned to station at 11:23 a.m.

• At 1:13 p.m. on Thursday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 415 S. Locust St. The third-floor alarm was determined to have been activated unnecessarily due to unknown reasons. GFD reset the alarm and returned to station at 1:22 p.m.
