WASHINGTON — Greencastle finished ninth in the IHSAA Washington Regional boys’ golf tournament on Thursday.

Junior Jake Bennett shot a 38 on the front nine and a 40 on the back nine to finish with a 78, which left him four strokes away from qualifying for the state finals as an individual on a non-advancing team.

Sophomore Jaxon Parmley had the second-best score of the day for the Tiger Cubs with a 45-42 total of 87, while freshman Kyle Tesmer had a 49-40 total of 89, freshman Connor Taylor had a 46-44 total of 90 and junior Blaise Hasty was close behind with a 50-41 score of 91.

Tiger Cub coach Steve Paquin was happy with how his team closed out the season, especially considering its youth.

“This was a pretty good finish for a young inexperienced team,” Paquin said. “Most of our players were playing with seniors from the other teams.

“The front nine caused most of the problems and the front nine scores were higher than normal,” he added, “but the Cubs played the back nine with a lower score than the front. Jake and Kyle had good scores on the back nine.”

Counting the four best scores, Greencastle shot 15 strokes better on the back nine (163) than the front nine.

Paquin said recent dry weather made for challenging scoring conditions.

“The course played long and hard as rain has not fallen for about two weeks,” he said. “Penalties were a factor as all the players had some.”

Paquin is happy with his young team’s success in season that featured county, conference and sectional titles, with all five golfers making all-county and four of five making all-WIC.

“The young Cubs finished an excellent season with lots of success and are looking for a great season next year with all five starters returning,” Paquin said.

Evansville North won the team title with a 292, while Park Tudor was second with 303 and Castle placed third with 310. Those teams will advance to the state finals next week at Carmel, along with the top five individuals on non-advancing teams — overall medalist Jack Cunningham of Vincennes Lincoln (70), Spencer Wagner of Evansville Mater Dei (71), Peyton Snoeberger of Seeger (71), Jackson Franchville of Cascade (72) and Kasey Lilly of Plainfield (74).

Cunningham, who will play for Ball State next year, tied Evansville North’s Eric Brinker but won a playoff to earn medalist honors.
