Kids Count

Enjoying a pro football practice with the Indianapolis Colts’ Fuel Up to Play 60, Dawson Mason fights through the tackling dummies to make a catch during Putnam Kids Count Character Camp on Tuesday at Heritage Lake. Putnam Kids Count is a non-profit organization started nine years ago by retired special education teacher Cindy Huddleston and her assistant Julie Mitchell. In addition to the Colts, other organizations like the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Putnam County Sheriff’s Department, Rural Transit, North Putnam Community School Corporation and Purdue Extension add to the fun. But it’s not all fun and games. “My main thing is character building,” Huddleston said, “to find someone and tell them how nice they are.” The organization is mostly funded through donations.
