Young driver ejected during rollover crash

BAINBRIDGE — A single-vehicle wreck Wednesday afternoon sent a Coatesville teenager to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Around 3 p.m., Indiana State Police and Putnam County emergency agencies responded to a one-vehicle rollover crash near 5018 East County Road 900 North.

During the crash, the 17-year-old male driver was ejected from the vehicle and subsequently trapped beneath the vehicle when first responders arrived.

Troopers and bystanders attempted multiple times to free the victim, but efforts were not successful until fire and rescue personnel utilized heavier rescue equipment.

The driver was transported to Hendricks Regional Health for treatment of life-threatening injuries. He was then airlifted to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

One 17-year-old male passenger and one 16-year-old male passenger were also in the vehicle and were reportedly using seatbelts. They reported no injuries.

State Police have not released the names of the teens.

Preliminary investigation revealed a gold 1998 Toyota Camry was westbound on 900 North, a little less than one mile southeast of Pine Bluff Covered Bridge, when the teenage driver lost control on the gravel surface and traveled off the north side of the roadway into a cornfield.

The Camry rolled multiple times, ejecting the driver and subsequently coming to rest on the victim.

The crash was investigated by ISP Senior Trooper John Myers. Assisting were ISP Sgt. Cory Robinson and Master Trooper DuJuan Presley-McFadden, Putnam County Sheriff’s Department, Putnam County Operation Life, Roachdale Fire/Rescue and Roachdale Police Department.

  • This is the 3rd bad accident in the last few weeks with area youth. Sure hope folks are taking the time to speak to their young sons and daughters at this time, to remind them how much they are loved and to be more cautious while driving.
