Free computer classes, tech support at Heritage Lake

The Putnam County Public Library will offer six free computer classes and two Community Help Desk sessions at the Heritage Lake clubhouse.

Classes are two hours long with a break.

Registration is now open. To sign up for any of the upcoming classes, view the library website at pcpl21.org, call Mike Acsbok at 653-2755 ext. 118 or stop by the circulation or reference desks at the library.

• July 11, 1-3 p.m.: “Introduction to Computers, Part One” will help understand how the computer works and will give persons the confidence to tackle future tasks on their own. Topics covered: History of Computers, How a Computer Works, Basic Computer Operation and Mouse Exercises.

• July 18, 1-3 p.m.: “Introduction to Computers, Part Two” will build on part one by teaching you to understand the words people use when talking about computers. Topics covered: Applications, Operating Systems and Hands on with a Graphical User Interface.

• July 21, 11 a.m.- 1 p.m.: A computer technician will be available to diagnose and repair electronics. Most repairs made in 20 minutes or recommended to a professional. The Community Help Desk is first-come, first-served, free and open to the public. Patrons must accompany their computers or electronics at all times; no drop-offs. Bring any power cables with you.

• July 25, 1-3 p.m.: “Introduction to Computers, Part Three” will build on part two by walking you through the most important parts of your operating system, managing your installed applications and organizing your personal computer files. Topics covered: Files and folders, copy and paste and adding and removing applications.

• July 14, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.: “Tablets and Smartphones” for those who need help with a new device, or are considering making a purchase. The different types of devices available will be discussed, including the Apple iPad, Microsoft Windows tablets, Android-based Google tablets and smartphones. Attendees will learn basic skills needed to connect to the Internet as well as how to use interactive maps, install applications and games, listen to music and watch movies.

• July 28, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.: “Introduction to the Internet” will introduce patrons to search engines, browsers and some of the best websites on the Internet.

• Aug. 4, 11 a.m.- 1 p.m.: “Safety and Security on the Internet” will discuss safeguarding your privacy and keeping computer and information secure while using the Internet.
