Hiram 'Hamburger' Barger Sr.

Hiram "Hamburger" Barger Sr., 89, Greencastle, passed away Saturday, July 8, 2017 at Putnam County Hospital.

Hiram was born in Saul, Ky., on March 27, 1928, the son of Justis and Mary Barger.

He attended Saul Kentucky Schools.

Mr. Barger worked as a sign supervisor with the Indiana State Highway Department for more than 34 years, he also worked for Marsh and LoBills Supermarket for more than 14 years, retiring when they closed.

He was known fondly by all who knew him as the Greencastle Whistler.

Hiram was a member of Well Spring Christian Church in Coatesville.

He loved to hunt, dig ginseng and eat mustard greens.

He always said "You'll never be broke as long as you have $12.64!"

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Norma Jean Barger; six sons, Harold Barger, (wife Lois), Greencastle, Lonny Barger, (wife Cathy), Greencastle, Larry Barger (wife Kathy), Brazil, Hiram Barger Jr., (wife Cindy), Greencastle, Kenneth L. Barger, Greencastle, and Wendell Barger, (wife Sandra), Coal City; 34 grandchildren; more than 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, nine brothers and four sisters.

Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 12 at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Pastor Steve Blaydes officiating.

A cremation will take place at a later date
