County Jail

Six people were booked in the Putnam County Jail recently.

Sunday

• At 9:30 p.m. Joshua Allen Smith, 34, Greencastle, was lodged at the jail on a warrant for burglary.

• At 7:21 p.m. Sarah Faith Burk, 18, Quincy, was taken into custody on a Marion County warrant.

• At 2:27 p.m. Anthony Ray Hicks, 46, Albuquerque, N.M., was arrested on an out-of-county warrant.

• At 3:02 a.m. Dustin King, 28, Coatesville, was charged with driving while intoxicated.

Saturday

• At 3:48 p.m. Zyan Shadwick Cox, 21, Greencastle, was housed at the jail for probation violation.

• At 4:52 p.m. Robert Nelson Diggs, 28, Greencastle, was booked in for probation violation.

Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies responded to one recent property-damage crash.

• At 5:48 p.m. on Friday, Michael O. Roberts, 19, Spencer, was driving on County Road 450 East about 1,000 feet south of County Road 475 East in a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu when he hit a chicken.

Deputy Jeffery Freeman estimated damage at $1,001-$2,500.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department recently responded to 12 dispatches and one medical run.

• At 6:01 p.m. on Friday, GFD responded to reports of a tree in the roadway near the intersection of Albin Pond and Round Barn roads. GFD cut and removed the tree from the roadway before returning to station at 6:38 p.m.

• At 6:10 p.m. on Friday, GFD responded to reports of downed power lines at 207 N. Locust St. Though a witness reported sparks from a nearby transformer, GFD reported no sparking or arcing taking place. Instead, the power lines were abserved to have fallen under trees lining the roadway after severe weather struck the area. GFD secured the property, shut down the electrical panel and contacted Duke Energy before subsequently returning to station at 6:19 p.m.

• At 6:11 p.m. on Friday, GFD responded to reports of a lightning strike and smoke in the residence at 110 Cassida Dr. However, further investigation made the prospect of a lightning strike unlikely as no smoke was observed. GFD observed the home was without power, prompting a call to Duke Energy before returning to station at 6:40 p.m.

• At 6:40 p.m. on Friday, GFD responded to reports of power lines on a residence at 411 E. Washington St. GFD arrived on scene wo witness a large tree had fallen onto the reporting residence, as well as a neighboring home and small shed. GFD secured the power lines until crews from Duke Energy arrived, subsequently returning to station at 11:15 p.m.

• At 6:44 p.m. on Friday, GFD responded to reports of a tree into a home at 1025 Shadowlawn Ave. Crews were met by the homeowner upon arrival, who had already secured the electrical panel before GFD’s arrival. GFD surveyed the scene, noting the integrity of the homeowner’s garage had come into question due to the tree. GFD then ensured the panel was off, noted the residents were to vacate the home and closed the garage door. The Red Cross was also notified of the family’s situation. GFD returned to station at 7:07 p.m.

• At 7:07 p.m. on Friday, GFD responded to reports of a tree in the roadway at 801 Shadowlawn Ave. GFD cut and removed the tree from the roadway before returning to station at 7:14 p.m.

• At 7:15 p.m. on Friday, GFD responded to reports of hazardous conditions at 1502 Albin Pond Rd. While en route to another dispatch, GFD came by a scene of a tree branch in the roadway and downed power lines. GFD then contacted dispatch to inform Duke Energy. Later, while en route back to station, GFD observed the power line had burned through the tree limb and was no longer in contact with them. Crews then further informed dispatch to notify Duke Energy that the situation was clear before returning to station at 7:18 p.m.

• At 7:25 p.m. on Friday, GFD responded to reports of a smoke-scare at 110 W. Walnut St. As crews were returning from another dispatch, loud booms could be heard nearby from residents setting off fireworks against city ordinances. GFD advised the group of the city ordinances and ensured the fireworks were removed from the scene before returning to station at 7:35 p.m.

• At 7:48 p.m. on Friday, GFD responded to reports of downed lines at 407 W. Franklin St. Crews were met by the homeowner upon arrival, who showed them a downed tree on a privacy fence in the backyard of the residence. No lines in question were found. GFD then advised the homeowner to contact his/her insurance company before returning to station at 8:05 p.m.

• At 3:01 p.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to reports of a dumpster fire at 1214 Castlebury Dr. Crews had the blaze under control at 3:13 p.m., using its water cannon for extinguishment. GFD contacted maintenane crews before subsequently returning to station at 3:40 p.m.

• At 5:12 p.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to reports of a tree in the roadway at 2056 E. County Road 125 North. The fallen tree was deemed to have stemmed from the severe weather that had struck the area the previous day. GFD cut and removed the tree from the roadway before returning to station at 6:01 p.m.

• At 11:28 p.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to a carbon-monoxide alarm at 2600 E. State Road 240 (Crown Equipment). No evacuation was observed upon arrival. GFD met maintenance crews, which ultimately fixed the source of the alarm and ventilated the building before returning to station at 12:32 a.m. on Sunday.
